Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX
1201 PM CST Tue Nov 13 2018
.UPDATE...
Southeast Texas has been aflutter with excitement as a wintry mix
has passed through the area this morning. One or two lightning
strikes were recorded in South Houston, giving us brief
thundersleet. Both Houston climate sites recorded a trace of
frozen precipitation, unofficially making this the earliest on
record at both sites - smashing the old record by 10 days. While
the public has reported sleet on Galveston Island, the official
observation has only recorded rain. However, if that were to
change, that would obviously demolish that city`s record, which
currently stands at December 4.
But...things are now winding down to an end. The mid-level
frontogenesis that`s helped support this event has now reached the
coastline, and precip will shortly push off to the east, or over
the water. At the same time, it appears the early mix of snow and
sleet has become a mix of sleet and rain as the temperature
structure of the column changes closer to the coast and later in
the morning.
It was fun while it lasted, but we now turn our attention over to
the cold weather tonight. Confidence is still high in a freeze
event impacting most, or all, of the inland zones. Thus, the
freeze watch is upgraded to a warning. Temperatures did not get
quite cold enough in our extreme northern zones that had a warning
last night, so have added them to this warning as well.

I'm only reading 45 which sounds odd but I was just outside in the sleet.harp wrote:What are your temperatures there?snowman65 wrote:Would be cool if it makes it way here to Orange area. We are getting sleet right now.

The GFS and Euro disagree big time on next weeks rain event. The GFS has a flood and the Euro only has an inch or two.

To answer your question, clouds are thinning just above the surface to the N and W, but there are some high clouds streaming along he sub tropical jet that may at least temporarily prevent us from completely clearing out. Maybe after midnight the entire area will finally clear as the upper trough orients itself closer to Dallas.LightningBolt wrote:Is the sky likely to completely clear tonight in our region?

My thermo has not reached above 39 here in Beaumont all day. I have a feeling the 45 high local mets forecasted are going to be a big bust.

Too much cloud cover for a high of 45. Not gonna happen unless you get a break in the clouds which probably won’t happen till later this evening into the overnight hours.djmike wrote:My thermo has not reached above 39 here in Beaumont all day. If the clouds don't clear out, how far south will the freezing temps actually reach? I'm south of Pearland and need to cover my Meyers lemons if it's actually going to get in the upper 20's for any extended period. If it's a couple hours at 30, I'm not going to bother.

The back edge of the clouds both high and lower level are nearing Bay City. We may also have a bit of a cold air advective freeze as winds are still up a bit and may not fully decouple or relax due to the proximity of the upper trough and some minor gradient with High Pressure settling in near the Panhandle.Cromagnum wrote:If the clouds don't clear out, how far south will the freezing temps actually reach? Didn’t run this morning...too cold and windy. Was going to run after work but after looking outside at the trees swaying in the wind, I’m thinking no. It looks cold, miserable, gray and depressing out there. Sorry cold lovers but I just don’t have many nice adjectives for this dreary weather. It’s just not fun to be out in it.
