So is it heat lightning I'm seeing on the other side of TX City? I don't hear any thunder. Are my rain chances over for the evening?
Thunder, lightning and heavy rainfall on and off at my location .... Hwy 6 and Settlers Way.

Heat lightning is one of those 'old wives tale.' You just can't hear the thunder from the storms over central and northern Harris.kayci wrote:So is it heat lightning I'm seeing on the other side of TX City? I don't hear any thunder. Are my rain chances over for the evening?
There is an outflow boundary moving southeastward toward southeast Harris, but it sure is getting late for it to trigger more storms...
Seeing over 3" of rain near Spring and approaching 3" over Bellarie.
Transtar reporting high water at some of the usual places- Southwest @ 59; Southwest @ Fountainview and Westpark Toll Road @ Post Oak.
There is no such thing as heat lightningkayci wrote:So is it heat lightning I'm seeing on the other side of TX City? I don't hear any thunder. Are my rain chances over for the evening?
Man, do I hate that myth. It's probably my #1 weather pet peeve
Meanwhile, it's finally raining over the rain bucket at IAH!
Kayci...I am also seeing the lightning with no thunder here in LaPorte....I went to the radar and it looks like the storms are not moving much...
Seeing a stabilization of the atmosphere. Storms/rainfall will begin to decrease in intensity soon.
Quite a thunderstorm earlier this evening.I would not surprise to see again in the early morning hour. It is raining again.

Had some real good rainfall last night at my house .... Today??? not so much. A few sprinkles ....thunder but it pretty much passed today. Not complaining though ... last nights rainfall was very welcome.

Is that thunder I am hearing off in the distance from here in Katy? My yard would love to get a shower today.

It's all a matter of definition.Ed Mahmoud wrote:I'd argue heat lightning is quite real. Its simple thunderstorm lightning far enough away that the atmosphere casts a reddish or orange hue, as it does when the sun angle is very low/amount of denser near surface atmosphere to absorb the higher frequency light the sun's whitish rays have to pass through, ie, red dawn and a rosy sunset, and the lightning is sufficiently far away that the resulting thunder is inaudible.
"Heat" lightning because distant lightning is easier to see from discrete cells, the ones that tend to pop in warmer weather. The cells in light midleving steering unlikely to affect a distant observer.
Back when the settlers were crossing the country, there was a belief (incorrect belief) that far away lightning was being caused only by the heat, because no thunder could be heard. Quoting from the link below
"Folk weather mythology suggests heat lightning is caused by hot air expanding until it sparks on sultry summer nights — an incorrect hypothesis. On the other hand, you will find many credible sources telling you that heat lightning does not exist. But, this is mostly a matter of semantics."

We saw a really cool funnel cloud over Galveston bay this morning as we were coming in from our cruise. I took some pictures that I will try to upload.
No rain, no rainbows.

No rain, no rainbows.
The QPF 5 day map. Looks like up to 12 inches could fall in the Gulf of Mexico. Houston gets about 3 to 5 inches. Looks, like it is from Alex.
