January 2017 -Warming Trend To End The Month

Quite the "winter" day here in Austin. For the sixth time this "winter," we set a new high temperature record. Today's marks of 82 at ABIA and 81 at Camp Mabry were easily encompassed. At 4 pm, we had 85 at ABIA and 83 at Mabry.

This wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have to suffer through our usual 4-5 months of summer blast furnace. I miss those years when some winter weather actually happened.

A few light showers across SE TX ahead the cool front approaching SE TX later this morning which will bring in cooler temps back to normal for the rest of the week. Partly to mostly sunny skies with high clouds through the weekend.

Wednesday morning briefing from Jeff:

Cold front is currently passing the area this morning which will return the region to more “normal” weather for this time of year if not a couple of degrees below normal. Moisture profiles are fairly limited, but radar is showing a few returns along and south of US 59 along a pre-frontal trough and along the actual front itself entering the Brazos Valley.

Fairly inactive weather pattern for the next 3-5 days with another front due off the coast on Saturday which will keep temperatures seasonal through the weekend with lows in the 30’s and highs in the lower 60’s. Front on Saturday looks more moisture starved than the front today, so not expecting much if any rainfall with the boundary.

Looking out into the longer range toward the middle and end of next week a cut-off upper level low could impact the region. While this is still far from certain and what sort of impacts we could expect from such a feature, much attention will be paid to this period in upcoming model runs given the host of activities in Houston next week into next weekend.

Not much to say about the SE TX weather this morning. Normal late January temps with high clouds that should give way to partly sunny skies through the weekend. The next front arrives Saturday and will be mostly dry with re-enforcing cool weather.

Surprise snow in San Angelo and Big Lake moving towards Junction. May not reach the Hill Country, but nice to see and salivate over. The northern mountains of Mexico may get in on the action.

As the upper levels saturate, it's possible that some light rain and possibly a sleet pellet or two could reach the ground mostly before 9:00 AM., but mostly with the dry layer at the surface mostly virga will be the outcome.

Last night actually hit the freezing mark around college Station 32°F IMBY and 30°F in Conroe. It might be close again in Conroe tonight.
