I wonder how many parents will send or bring their kids to school early in the morning before the ice has melted from the streets.SusieinLP wrote:LP schools will be open tomorrow at regular time....Hope the roads are ok
January: Calmer Pattern To End The Month
Yes! A quick note about travelling I-10 east twds Beaumont/Winnie. Everything is still pretty much a stand still and no traffic is proceeding. I fell asleep for a quick nap and just went back outside to "investigate" and we have accumulated more ice and sleet. Many many roads, highways and Interstates are completely shutdown. I have icles almost as big as my arm hanging of my house as everyone else here does too. We did not get near or above freezing at all today so everything that has frozen is still there! If you do have to head this way, expect major major detours if you are allowed even that. We have received a LOT more ice than Houston has and its still freezing and/or falling, so don't think if Houston roads are fine and ok to drive, that they are fine here. There not. Just a word of advice from someone this way currently entombed in my igloo....I mean house.

....as I was writing my previous post. This came up for Beaumont! I discourage any travel this way!!

UPDATE:
News Release
Highway conditions are extremely icy and hazardous at this time and IH 10 had to be closed in the City for safety purposes. There have been intermittent closures of the Purple Heart (Neches River) bridge, but the goal is to keep it open. Since the Memorial and Rainbow bridges in Port Arthur (Highway 87) are closed, the remaining alternative routes involve transit through Lumberton on Highway 69 N.

thank you for the clarification, but even still. I think that's likely, that there will be no more accumulations, but I'm having fun thinking maybe it can still snow so I'm not giving uptireman4 wrote:nuby3 wrote:tireman4 wrote:This should answer the moisture out west question....

Question, if I may sir. First, one comment. Thank you so much for all you do on and for this board. It is much appreciated. Your insight over the years has been great. Now, the question. What do you make of the moisture out to our West? Virga ?
Precip is definitely a lot lighter to our west. Some of it is likely not reaching the ground, but some is. That's why we could have light sleet mixed with small snowflakes into this evening, but no accumulations.
no offense but I'm just going to watch and see what happens you may be right but I want to sit and watch just in case something good happens
That was from Wxman 57, not me. Goodness me, I am not a pro met (Wxman 57), amateur met (Srainhoutx) or expert. That was asked two hours ago. Has it changed? Not sure.
I know this isn't about weather but related - does anyone know if Houston Metro Park and Ride are running in the morning? Trying to make plans how I am getting to work tomorrow - I have to go.

One the local news stations posted on Facebook that metro and busses would operate as usual tomorrow.
Edit to add: that would be KHOU who posted on Facebook saying services would operate under normal hours.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 354 PM CST TUE JAN 28 2014/
DISCUSSION...
HEAVIER PRECIPITATION HAS EXITED INTO LOUISIANA THIS AFTERNOON
WITH ONLY LIGHT ECHOES PERSISTING ACROSS THE REGION. SOME SLEET IS
STILL BEING REPORTED IN A FEW ISOLATED AREAS BUT FEEL THAT HEAVIER
RETURNS ARE DUE TO BRIGHT BANDING ASSOCIATED WITH SNOW FALLING
INTO THE WARM LAYER AND BEGINNING TO MELT. VERTICAL CROSS SECTIONS
TEND TO SUPPORT THE OBSERVATIONS THAT VERY LITTLE OF THIS IS
REACHING THE GROUND. ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF LIGHT ECHOES HAS
OCCURRED ACROSS THE HILL COUNTRY OVER THE LAST HOUR OR TWO AND
THIS WILL CONTINUE TO SPREAD EASTWARD INTO THE SOUTHERN HALF OF
SOUTHEAST TEXAS THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS. THIS WILL LIKELY RESULT
IN SOME LIGHT SNOW FLURRIES THIS EVENING FOR AREAS FROM INTERSTATE
10 SOUTHWARD BUT LITTLE...IF ANY...ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED.
OF GREATEST CONCERN TONIGHT WILL BE COLD TEMPERATURES. MOST OF THE
REGION WILL DROP INTO THE 20S TONIGHT WITH A HARD FREEZE EXPECTED
FOR THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE REGION...INCLUDING OUTLYING PORTIONS
OF HARRIS COUNTY. A HARD FREEZE WARNING IS IN EFFECT BEGINNING AT
MIDNIGHT FOR THESE AREAS. CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT PLANTS
AND PETS AND PIPES FROM THE COLD TEMPERATURES...WHICH WILL BE
COLDER THAN LAST NIGHT. THESE TEMPERATURES WILL ALSO SUPPORT THE
POTENTIAL FOR SOME ICY SPOTS TO DEVELOP ON ROADWAYS AS RESIDUAL
MOISTURE FROM TODAYS PRECIPITATION BEGINS TO FREEZE. EXTREME
CAUTION SHOULD BE USED WHEN TRAVELING TONIGHT AND ASSUME THAT
BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES WILL HAVE PATCHES OF ICE. THE ONLY POSSIBLE
EXCEPTION TO THIS WOULD BE ACROSS OUR FAR NORTHERN COUNTIES WHICH
MANAGED TO SEE SOME SUNSHINE AND DRYING THIS AFTERNOON.
TEMPERATURES TOMORROW AFTERNOON WILL WARM BACK INTO THE LOW 40S
WHICH SHOULD HELP TO END OUR WINTER WEATHER CONCERNS FOR THE WEEK.
STRONG MOISTURE RETURN IN RESPONSE TO LEE CYCLOGENESIS ACROSS THE
CENTRAL PLAINS WILL BRING OUR TEMPERATURES BACK INTO THE LOW 70S
BY SATURDAY. RAIN CHANCES WILL ALSO RETURN BY THE WEEKEND AHEAD OF
A COLD FRONT WHICH WILL MOVE THROUGH SOUTHEAST TEXAS ON SUNDAY.
RAIN CHANCES LOOK TO PERSIST THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK AS MID TO
UPPER LEVEL MOISTURE CONTINUES TO STREAM ACROSS THE AREA. HAVE
TRENDED PRECIPITATION CHANCES UPWARD FOR LATE THIS WEEK AS
CONFIDENCE CONTINUES TO INCREASE. DID NOT RAISE POPS FOR EARLY
NEXT WEEK JUST YET BUT THESE WILL LIKELY NEED TO BE RAISED FURTHER
IF CURRENT TRENDS CONTINUE. 38

Still getting a few sleet pellets in NW Harris County as well. All in all a huge shout out to Jeff, wxman57, Candy Cane, weartherag and all of our longtime knowledgeable weather friends for all the effort you put forth the past week and half. We cannot forget KHOU and the Weather Team. If it were not for their confidence and behind the scene activity, this platform would not be here today. Take time and drop a note to web@khou.com and let them know how much we appreciate their continued support over these many years. Also, again welcome to all the new folks that took the time and registered as new members. We welcome you. We truly have a great group with many years of weather experience and the knowledge and time you put into make this Regional Weather Forum the place that folks far and wide can trust to find good and factual information. My hat is off to ALL of you. On to next week!

And an HUGE thank you to our amateur met, Srainhoutx. Dan loved this board and loved you too. Thank you so much for keeping this going. Supplying us with an endless array of maps, models and watch words (Stepping down, patience folks, we shall see). Thank you so much. Onto next week.

So how are we looking out west?
If that is pushing south, it's doing so slowly.

The airmass across Texas is drying out quickly. Radar shows echoes west of Houston but most of that is sleet/snow which is not reaching the ground. There will still be some very light sleet and snow for the next 6 hours or so, but no accumulations. Just a curiosity. Big warm-up for Friday/Saturday - up into the 70s. Watch out late next week, though...

thank you very much sir, yours is the opinion I most respect around here. I'm not expecting anything amazing to happen, just hoping for a chance to run with a few flakes falling here or there tonight. I am an ultra-marathoner, I have a bunch of races coming up, and I love running in cold, ice, and snow. please let us know more when you can about next week and thanks again!!!
Yes a big shout out to all the pro mets and amateurs alike who keep this board going. I don't post as much as others but thoroughly enjoying reading the board and look forward to posting more in the future. Thanks and Gig 'Em
