going into the GOM.

Hello back at ya, Texas Pirate...and thanks so much for bringing your message of preparedness for the senior and disabled community to Galveston. It was really nice to "eyeball" (old CB radio term) one of my weather buds. You had a lot of useful informantion to share with the public. Well, today is June 1st. Hurricane Season. For the next 6 months, all eyes on the GOM.
There is one thing I really want to stress (other than having a PLAN) is this:
IF you or a loved one, is dependent on electricity, to LIVE
MAKE A PLAN now to get OUT of town. Especially if you live
in a low lying area and must evacuate.
Once you lose power don't think the power company will
come right on over to turn your power back on.
They won't. Maybe they cant get to your area.
And you'll be like a fish out of water.
LEAVE.
Make a plan and figure out where you would go
who you would stay with
and how you will get there.
You know your disability better than anyone else.
You know what you have to do to sustain an independent lifestyle.

I know I have spoke extensively about preparation and what you need regardless if you "hunker down" or are under
mandatory evacuation to leave (either with friends/family or to a shelter)
(REMEMBER: if your life depends on electricity you should LEAVE)
Now I will turn to sheltering and what you should expect AFTER the storm.
First: SHELTERING:
At the Galveston town meeting, a woman with a disability came to the table.
She was new in the area and asked the following question about "sheltering".
The woman was in a wheelchair and dependent upon oxygen to breathe.
New to Galveston.
She only has one sister in Austin. Both have no cars.
She said "What do I do? I have heard so many conflicting reports about people in wheelchairs. I hear some
shelters wont even take me. I want to leave, but maybe I should just stay."
WRONG. NO. WRONG. I told her. The organization that did turn away in the past, is working on it and getting better.
Accessible sheltering is a major push by the disability activists and advocates working with different organizations
in making it better.
Being dependent upon oxygen to live - you will leave.
I told her to register with the city to get help getting out.
She did.
She wrote down all her meds she's on at my table and we started to build a plan.
Now what happens if you have to evacuate and go to shelter instead of with family/friends?
Lets all agree being in a shelter is NOT the Hilton.
It's like camping with a lot of people you don't know
without the fun of making s'mores.
But go ahead, sing a round of Kumbaya.
You will be provided a cot. Food. Updates on the weather.
Showers and a bathroom.
But the cool thing is: You will be OUT OF HARMS WAY.
You might get to San Antonio or Austin (depending on where your city takes you on this wild adventure)
and from what I'm' hearing some shelters may be as close as just outside of Houston to the west of us.
Wheel of Wonder....
In any event, once you are there - you are safe.
(When the ALL CLEAR is given by our emergency managers of a particular city, you can go back.
IF there are no gas leaks or other issues that would cause injury or death.)
You should take with you some kind of id that you lived where you lived.
You obviously will have all that in formation in your evacuation kit.
Drivers license/insurance/maybe even a water or gas bill.
What should you take if you shelter (or to a friends/family home outside the SURGE or FLOOD ZONE two different things)
Your important papers and those of your families if you are going with more than just yourself
If you take your pet (REMEMBER TEXAS IS A PET FRIENDLY SHELTER STATE!) their important papers, their carriers,
their FOOD. Shelters will NOT feed pets YOU are to provide that.
Service dogs are ALWAYS allowed. is the LAW.
Pillows/blankets
Towels and other hygienic stuff
medications/doctors information/prescriptions - which can be gotten PRIOR to the storm. Some doctors give a three month supply during the summer. Check with your doctor.
If you have children: their information/clothes/medication/doctor information
diapers/baby food/pacifiers
Toys and games for children. Remember children need to be comforted thru this difficult time too.

List of family phone numbers and addresses OUTSIDE the area. A(You will want to call them and tell you where you are going. They can be the contact point for information for everyone)

One of the most popular item on my table
(other than the fascination of material in braille)
is a zip lock bag.
That's right. A simple zipped lock bag.
When people ask me "What is that for?" I am more than happy to tell them.
Write your name on the bag
write the meds going into that bag
(Use as many as you need if you take multi-medications. Try and keep them separate.)
Make sure its identified properly
You can even put your prescription in it, if you got them.
When the time comes and you need to evacuate:
take the bag out of wherever you are keeping it, put in the meds.

That's right. A simple zipped lock bag.
When people ask me "What is that for?" I am more than happy to tell them.
Write your name on the bag
write the meds going into that bag
(Use as many as you need if you take multi-medications. Try and keep them separate.)
Make sure its identified properly
You can even put your prescription in it, if you got them.
When the time comes and you need to evacuate:
take the bag out of wherever you are keeping it, put in the meds.
