Can you put together an analysis of CT El Nino vs WP El Ninos and their associated PDOs, AOs and NAOs... Particularly interested in the high precip, cool to cold weather years.... 1972/1973, 1982/1983, 1997/1998...

Thanks!

Huge Thanks!

Interesting..... I thought I might draw a correlation between those values, the type of Winter HGX had and the type of El Nino, but I'm not seeing much of a pattern....

With the PDO tanking this year and El Nino, I was thinking we might see a repeat of one of these. That line of thinking obviously is flawed.

CT ENSO
PDO
3 Warm Phase
1 Cool Phase

AO
2 Positive
2 Negative

NAO
2 Positive
2 Negative

Rainfall
1972-1973 84th Wettest
1976-1977 41st Wettest
1982-1983 17th Wettest
1997-1998 10th Wettest

Temperature
1972-1973 10th Coldest
1976-1977 6th Coldest
1982-1983 46th Coldest
1997-1998 71st Coldest

CT ENSO has produced some of the coldest winters on record. The cold winters in the CT ENSO occurred in a year which went from La Nina to El Nino, like 1972 and 1976. In terms of rainfall, it is wet for the most part.

WP ENSO
PDO
3 Warm Phase
2 Cool Phase

AO
2 Positive
2 Negative

NAO
2 Positive
2 Negative

Rainfall
1977-1978 48th Wettest
1990-1991 2nd Wettest
1994-1995 24th Wettest
2002-2003 29th Wettest
2004-2005 74th Wettest

Temperature
1977-1978 1st Coldest
1990-1991 48th Coldest
1994-1995 96th Coldest
2002-2003 35th Coldest
2004-2005 90th Coldest

WP ENSO is more likely to have wetter years, but in terms of temperature, not really cold with the exception of 1977-1978, which is coldest on record from 1895 to 2012 in Upper Texas Coast. 1990-1991 is often not considered an El Nino winter. 1977-1978 was a second El Nino after 1976-1977.

Mixed ENSO
PDO
3 Warm Phase

AO
1 Positive
2 Negative

NAO
1 Positive
2 Negative

Rainfall
1986-1987 12th Wettest
1987-1988 96th Wettest
1991-1992 1st Wettest

Temperature
1986-1987 33rd Coldest
1987-1988 24th Coldest
1991-1992 88th Coldest

Mixed ENSO generally has wet winters, but not really cold winters. The winters can get cold at times. 1991-1992 occurred in a period of prolonged El Nino. Early 1990s was wet for Upper Texas Coast.
