The sudden demise of TS Don reminded me of Hurricane Allen in 1980. I recall following this storm via the local news in Houston. People were very concerned about potential for damage in Texas, but at the time we were having one the worst heat waves on record in Texas. When Allen made landfall, the impact was less than anticipated. Part of that was the location, the sparsely populated area of King Ranch, southwest of Corpus Christi. The other aspect was the dry air that Allen sucked in as he crossed the coast.
With our current drought and heatwave, it will be interesting to see what happens if/when we have another tropical system making landfall this season.

Heat wave & Hurricane Allen 1980
Allen almost hit Texas as a Category 5 hurricane. Think of that hitting Texas at that?!?!
Allen was a large hurricane on top of it. I know in September 1980, Tropical Storm Danielle made landfall on Upper Texas Coast and broke the drought.
I notice Tropical Depression #1 made landfall on Texas in July 1980. Not a rainmaker though.
