Center of Edouard is moving closer to I-45 now. May see heavy storms near daybreak in the north metro.

Some locations in the Piney Woods have received 20+ inches of rain overnight and rainfall rates of up to 4 inches per hour continue. That is 4 times greater than any computer model suggested for this tropical event.

What is happening to Edouard is called the Brown Ocean Effect. Normally, hurricanes and tropical storms lose strength when they make landfall, but when the brown ocean effect is in play, tropical cyclones maintain strength or even intensify over land surfaces

According to my textbook, "In several regions of the world, tropical cyclones have been known to maintain or increase strength after landfall without transitioning to extratropical systems. It is hypothesized that these inland areas help sustain tropical cyclones when there has been plentiful rainfall, leading to unusually wet soil and strong latent heat release. Additionally, given the symmetric structure of warm-core cyclones, the atmosphere should tend toward barotropic conditions that mimic an ocean environment. Observational and modeling studies support this "brown ocean" concept, providing a global climatology of inland tropical cyclones, pinpointing regions that are more favorable for re-intensification, and analyzing individual cyclones to better understand the associated land-atmosphere feedbacks."

Ethan Kerr ( this met disagrees with the Brown Ocean Effect for Edouard. I still think it is because of the high moisture content in the air. Just my opinion)

Watching the horrific flooding going on..im kinda glad this thing didnt come here. I feel sorry for those people in east Texas. You never know what these things are going to do regardless of what a computer says how many inches you are suppose to get

I looked at the radar, maybe near 11pm last night, and dadgum if that thing didn't still look like an inland mini-hurricane with an easy to see semi-eye. I think that was near Votaw. Had broken down by 12:15 am.

Something VERY fascinating is happening over Texas – Edouard's structure is IMPROVING. It's developed an eye (again). And it's 110 miles inland.
Is Edouard a zombie storm? Sort of. It's due to something called the Brown Ocean Effect. In other words, Edouard *thinks* it's still over the Gulf. So it's chugging along.
That's because topsoil temperatures are between 80 and 85 degrees AND the soil is wet and swampy due to earlier rains as Edouard was approaching. So its still-intact core is able to extract heat energy from those soils and maintain strength longer than otherwise.
That's how Tropical Storm Erin came back to life over Oklahoma in 2007. The remnants suddenly reintensified northwest of Oklahoma City, producing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. Erin was stronger inland than it was over the Gulf!
Winds in Watonga, Oklahoma gusted as high as 82 mph! 12.81 inches of rain fell on Eakly, Oklahoma. There were two drownings in the state.
In Sisterdale, Tex., two people drowned as they were swept into Sister Creek. 10.70 inches of rain fell there.
Despite the low displaying tropical characteristics, the National Hurricane Center still states it was a non-tropical low by that point. The local National Weather Service office in Norman, Oklahoma treated it as a tropical storm, and described it as such in their morning forecast discussion, issued at 5:55 a.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2007:
AN EXTRAORDINARY WEATHER EVENT CONTINUES TO UNFOLD OVER CENTRAL OKLAHOMA EARLY THIS MORNING AS THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM ERIN HAVE INTENSIFIED... RESULTING IN WHAT AMOUNTS TO AN INLAND TROPICAL STORM. AT 550 AM... THE WELL-DEFINED CENTER WAS LOCATED BETWEEN OKARCHE AND PIEDMONT BASED ON RADAR AND SURFACE OBSERVATIONS... MOVING SLOWLY EAST AT 10 MPH. A BAND OF FLOOD-PRODUCING RAIN WAS
LOCATED FROM KINGFISHER TO GUTHRIE TO OKLAHOMA CITY TO NORMAN TO LINDSAY... AND SOUTHWESTWARD TO WAURIKA AND TEMPLE.
