With winter looming, when does Houston see its first 32°F day?

Mean: 336 or December 2
Median: 337 or December 3
Standard Deviation: 18.471534
Earliest: October 20, 1989
Latest: January 5, 1987

Sometimes, Houston see its first 32°F in January, like in the winter of 1970-1, 1986-7, and 1994-5.

Interesting to note the earliest 32°F at KIAH was 4 days after Hurricane Jerry made landfall.

I have either Dec 3 or Dec 4th in the office pool for first 32F at IAH. How'd I pick that date, same as every year. I put all dates from Nov 1 to Jan 10 in a bowl and picked one. Almost won last year. Before "the bowl" I thought long and hard about my pick each year and never came close.

Interesting. One can make a prediction just my doing a random draw. What date did you choose before the bowl?

Before just picking dates out of a bowl, I'd spend weeks analyzing ENSO and analog years, figuring the most likely date for a first freeze. In the end, the receptionist would win the contest and I'd be weeks off. It became clear that those of us who would spend too much time analyzing the patterns were just thinking too much. Too many variables to do it that way. So the bowl works better. ;-)

We'll see temps in the mid to upper 40s Thursday night/Friday night. Then it warms back up for Halloween. Maybe we'll get back into the 40s the 2nd week of November. Sure looks like a nice, warm and dry winter for us this year. My kind of winter.

Sigh and bad for runners who wanted cold. Oh well.
