We're getting our first look at the devastation in Western NC, what officials are now calling "Buncombe County's own Hurricane Katrina."
County Emergency Management held a press conference this afternoon, calling the damage "biblical." Here's what we learned:

Looking at the flood in North Carolina and Tennessee, this could eclipse Harvey in terms of damage. I do not want to even think about the death toll at this point. :o

It is startling to see high storm surge in Tampa Bay from Helene. Helene was nowhere near Tampa Bay. I hope this is a wake up call in the Tampa Bay Area.

Good morning gang! We have internet back, still no cellular service. The house sits a little up a mountain just above the Valley floor, so we are fine. Not good for folks living along Creeks and streams that became raging rivers. Many areas are cut off after bridges were swept away and unfortunately we have fatalities from folks being swept away in flood waters I measured 22.6 inches of rain in 48 hours.

It's unbelievable. At least $20B in damage, 65+ lost lives. Some folks are still without power and it could take weeks.

Based on what I have seen, it is. It’s also extremely heartbreaking. This is an area of the coast that frequently dodges these events because of the angle of the coastline. It’s not as protected as St. Augustine up to Savannah, but still, there’s never been anything like this in anyone’s lifetime in Tampa Bay.

I keep thinking about all the small businesses and restaurants along the west coast that flooded. The sponge docks in Tarpon Springs got totally destroyed. Same with John’s Pass, even down to St. Armand’s, which is just crazy. A lot of these places are still “old Florida” dives that have been around for generations so the people owning and running them know no different life, and they have no idea if, how, or when they will ever recover from this. I wish I was down there now so I could volunteer!!

And approximately 1,000 still missing in NC. This is utterly heartbreaking.
