Isn't this at a really critical stage by this point??? I know that from a building standpoint too dry or too wet is horrible for house foundations. Also, without any rain on grass and even trees and shrubs that they can be lost fairly quickly and are rediculous to replace in terms of cost and labor....

At this point, are we facing a bad drought unless we get heavy Jan and Feb rains?

This thing looks like it's almost on shore, on the coast of Mexico. I don't see how there's any way it can come north. Never say never but, never.... I'd not worry if I were a Houstonian.
