Cold Front 2011

Okay, I know we're just a tiny bit out from our first cold front, but we're definitely lining up for final approach. Though arbitrary, I suspect that we are within 3 or 4 weeks of breaking this God awful summer and saying hello to bone chilling highs of 90 degrees or less as we head into September. I've been closely watching the models and they only go out to Sept. 2nd. Though that is a bit early, we've had cold fronts as early as September 13th. Does that date ring a bell? Cough.....anyway, I'm climbing the crows nest and keeping me eyes peeled. I 'spect that I be callin' LAND HO! before long ;)

Talk to me Candy Cane. Sing it to the heavens...Larry Cosgrove is mentioning that September 4-5 would be when we finally get back to climo (92-73). You are seeing even more cooler weather coming?

I really hope so, because this heat is really, really old. I just wish I could have brought some of the cool air down from the Canadian Maritimes when I was there in June. Highs in the 50s & 60s, lows in the mid to upper 40s.

We may well continue with the 100F+ heat all the way through September and October this year. ;-)

Oh no you don't. You have had, and I stress, you have had:

April
May
June
July
August

You have had the hottest summer ever. Ever Wxman 57. We cold lovers need some time. Thanks for listening. LOL

I agree with wxman on this one as the heat is more a factor of the dry ground and drought coupled with the ridge aloft. Until we get widespread wetting rains, temperatures will be above average well into the fall and winter.

Without rain the first front with gusty north winds and low RH will bring some major wildfire concerns and they will continue through the winter if no rain falls. Decent RH and fairly light winds are keeping things in check now, but remove those two items and you will have unstoppable wildfires given the massive amounts of now dead vegetation and trees.

SJRA began releasing 50 billion gallons of water yesterday at noon from Lake Conroe to help stabilize the rapid decline on Lake Houston. This release coupled with current evaporation rates will drop the lake by 5-6 inches per week. Drought plans built around the long term 1950's drought are going to be soon tested and I suspect some major water right battles and enough stiffer conservation measures will be coming to many areas if rains do not fall by October.

Every day that ticks by brings us closer to moving out of the period of help from the tropics.

Time to get my RAID cans and I mean the most powerful RAID to kill the Cockroach Ridge that gives us heat and drought.

Was just looking at the latest extended range going out to September 8th and that high is anchored right over us nearly the entire time. Still no fronts on the horizon. It's encouraging to see weaknesses starting to break down the high to the east a bit. Perhaps one day it'll break it over us. Sigh, here's to more of the same for the next 16 days (per today's model runs)

Let's hope it changes, so we can say good riddance to the Cockroach Ridge.  8-)

Nice weather you got here! :D better hot than freezing cold.
Scientist said that in the next few years it would be hard to really predict weather because the climate is very eratic. it could change just in a few hours. And as I have heard there was a hailstorm in the philippines when philippines is located near equator.

It is looking rather promising that a pretty stout cold front will be moving in by September 7th. I've seen numbers as low as 56 degrees per the 18z gfs. We'll see. Thankfully, the hundreds are on the death bed. 2 more days folks, two more days!!!

So our much anticipated cold front is on final approach! Looking at models, 850 temps cool to 12 degrees over the area. This coupled with dewpoints in the low to mid 40s and extremely dry vegetation and ground, I suspect many of us could dip into the upper 50s to around 60 going into Monday night! Unfortunately, there is absolutely NO RAIN in the forecast for the foreseeable future.

Guess we can't have it all, rain AND cooler weather. Would rather have the rain, but I will take the cooler temps!

It looks like our cold front lies roughly from Wichita Falls-Abilene-Marfa and slowly heading S and E...

This cold front has helped create some of the worst fires and fire producing weather we have ever seen. This is truly a sad story to see so much loss of land, property, and lives. This is turning into an even worst natural disaster with no relief in sight.

Yes, this has drought has already cost more than Alicia and Allison. We're in the neighborhood of $6 billion and counting. There is a large fire behind my house currently that I am watching CLOSELY. The Woodlands Fire Department and other VFD's have been going up and down my street and behind our houses. Helicopters flying overhead, too.

On a side note, did anybody see that Hurricane Ike is now the 2nd costliest hurricane/disaster on record?

Keep safe Candy Cane let us know what is going on!

When did they change it? What made NOAA change that?
