What and When You Got Into Weather?

Since we are here because we are interested in weather. What and when did you get into weather?

For me, I was a kid and Hurricane Gilbert caused a great scare for Texas in 1988. I remember it very well and from there I got into weather. Also, it was furthered by the crazy weather of 1989, freeze, floods, drought, and hurricanes.

My mother taught me to track hurricanes back in the early 1960s in Lafayette, LA. After impacts from Hilda in '64 and Betsy in '65 I was hooked on hurricanes.

Hurricane Carla/1961. Although I was young, the 'interest' in all things weather began that September.

I grew up in West Texas where it is boring as hell. Weather was the only thing that ever changed in our little town. I tell my kids about the day I went to work and they sent us home to enjoy the thunderstorm. :D

I got kind of addicted in a sick way to the excitement, especially tornados. After going through my first hurricane (Ike) some friends asked me how it compared. I was afraid to go near the windows, but I've learned that you aren't likely to get a cow flying through your window during a hurricane. But the devastation lasts longer and is more widespread, it seems to me.

It was without a doubt a during a tornado-warned storm on May Day about ten years ago. The sky turned green and hail poured down. Trees came down all over our yard, a neighbor's roof was ripped off, a trampoline was thrown through the air into a playground, and our deck table was tossed straight through a railing. We found out later it was likely a strong microburst, and the incredible wreckage forever got me interested in the weather.

Of course, it was only compounded by the occasional 18" blizzard and -30sF cold snap.

Hey, hey. It's Texo Flexo from Eastern. I didn't know you had signed up here...

Unfortunately, your first summer in this here land looks to be filled with heat and dry, like last year around here (though that was even a bit worse). I'm serious when I say it usually is more fun than this :(. Although, I'm assuming you are in CLL right now

I grew up in this area and my Grandma was a 1900 Hurricane survivor. Boy could she tell a story or two. My dad and i would track the storms when I was a kid. Weather has always been a passion for me. I'm 51 and don't ever remember not being excited by all things weather.

Yeah, I'm in CLL right now for registration and the like. Luckily, I probably won't be back here 'til mid-August.

But until Sunday evening I get to enjoy the heat and, starting tomorrow, Galveston's beaches.

As a young kid, I was actually terrified of thunderstorms ... especially after an event on July 4, 1969, in northern Ohio where we had a tornado near our house. My entire family was "into" the weather and between that and my fear, I had a teacher in elementary school tell me the best way to get over something was to learn about it. So, I started studying weather books.

Now, I'm the goofball getting into my car and driving around town when the skies darken!
