Incorrect. I wish I had the images to show, but if you go to any model site and look at the 500mb-700mb temperatures, this is not a cold core system. There is a significant warm nose (inversion) above us which is exactly why the preicp falling tonight will NOT be snow. It falls as snow, gets in the warm layer, and depending on the depth of the inversion, will melt completely into rain drops then freeze on contact since the surface is at or below freezing and that is what we call freezing rain. If there is a short warm depth and then falls back below freezing a couple thousand feet up, then the precip will refreeze, thus creating sleet.

Tonight, there is a pretty good depth of warm layer where this will mainly be a freezing rain issue more than a sleet issue I believe. Though, due expect some sleet. I wish I had a Skew T to upload along with a 500mb-700mb diagram to show you, but I am not where I can upload that at the moment.

No, he is right when saying there is warm air above. Look at how deep that warm layer is:

Alright, I lied, you gave me a challenge where I wanted to upload these.

This would be a cold core low (aka: what we could see next weekend according to the GFS) 500mb Image

This is what we have currently: 500mb

This is the current Skew T for the Houston area:Image

Follow the O'C line and notice the huge inversion. About 50 degrees up about 800mb. By looking at this sounding, this would be more of a freezing rain sounding than sleet, but sleet could still fall, which is obviously happening around some of the areas.

This will likely be the most significant event the area has seen with respect to ice in years

Now, there's freezing rain one mile north of Hobby Airport. Just went outside and noticed that ice is forming
on the backyard cyclone fence.

Agreed. Where are all the closings then? This is going to make for a very bad situation tomorrow.

Woke up for something and decided to check in. I don't hear anything outside......although the radar shows purple all over the area. Is it over or is there more coming? Or was Spring and the Woodlands skipped over?
