Check out the Houston/Galveston NWS site. They have a graphic that shows where they think the higher amounts accumulation will occur.

.25" of ice and a 1/2" to 1" of snow on top isn't trivial.

The latest GFS is rather suggestive that light wintry weather will develop across SE Texas into Louisiana.

12z NAM and GFS have come in wetter from the 00z equivalent runs. Also it looks like the Houston Metro area may be "under the gun" more than originally predicted. A lot of models show some of the stronger moisture setting up over that area.

No kidding. That's alright, Ed has a questionable track record when it comes to saying a weather event is nothing to be worried about.

After living in the DFW metroplex for a number of years and then relocating here, there is one notable exception between the two regions.

Almost every road in the DFW metroplex is striated/combed concrete. This is by design to counter the frequent ice storms.

We still have a LOT of blacktop down here. A lot of secondary roads here are not concrete, and Ice is MUCH worse on blacktop than concrete.

Update from NWS Houston/Galveston extends Winter Storm Warning a bit longer for tomorrow:

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
1110 AM CST THU JAN 23 2014

.UPDATE...
MORNING FORECAST UPDATE.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
COUPLE OF ISSUES WITH THREAT FOR WINTER WEATHER OVER THE AREA.
FIRST WE EXTENDED THE WINTER STORM WARNING TO 18Z FRI OR NOON.
MAIN REASON FOR THIS IS THAT IT LOOKS LIKE THERE MAY STILL BE
FROZEN PRECIP FALLING THROUGH THE MORNING AND TEMPERATURES MAY NOT
WARM MUCH WITH PRECIP AND CLOUD COVER. PLUS COLD ADVECTION LOOKS
TO BE SLOWING DOWN BUT STILL ON GOING. GFS MAY BE DRYING OUT
PRECIP TOO QUICKLY BUT THINK NAM MAY BE HOLDING ONTO PRECIP TOO
LONG. THIS SPLITS THAT DIFFERENCE.

MAIN UPDATE WAS TO WARM TEMPS AHEAD OF FRONT AND SLOW TIMING OF
WHEN TEMPS DROP BELOW FREEZING EARLY TONIGHT. WARMED TEMPS SOME
WITH PRECIP OCCURRING BUT REALLY NEED TO WATCH TRENDS IN DEWPOINTS
AS DEWPOINTS IN THE TEENS ARE NOT FAR AWAY FROM COLLEGE STATION TO
CROCKETT. THIS DRIER AIR WITH THE ARCTIC AIRMASS COULD IMPACT
PRECIP AND TEMPERATURES LATER THIS AFTERNOON. WE WILL CONTINUE TO
MONITOR TRENDS BUT POSSIBLE THAT WINTER STORM WARNING MAY BE
DELAYED A FEW HOURS DEPENDING ON TEMPS AND WHEN ICE ACCUMULATIONS
BEGIN TO OCCUR.

FINALLY WE ADDED A WIND ADVISORY FOR THE COAST TIER OF COUNTIES.
MAY NOT BE QUITE AS WINDY FOR WHARTON/FORT BEND/HARRIS COUNTIES
BUT ENOUGH TO ADD THEM TO THE ADVISORY. AT LEAST SOUTHERN PORTIONS
OF THOSE COUNTIES COULD EXPERIENCE 20 TO 30 MPH WINDS.

Selective memory from some people.

Haha, we know Ed. We are just giving you a hard time. Trust me I enjoy reading what you have to think and you are very knowledgeable in what you do have to say. Trust me I have made plenty of mistakes myself.

Relax Ed ... nobody is trying to question your meteorological knowledge ... but when you make a comment that this upcoming event is a "trivial" one for Houston, what do you expect?! Even a tenth inch of ice in south Texas is far from trivial and usually has large consequences on travel and communities. It may be trivial to you but it sure as heck won't be to thousands of others. Your local NWS office has the area under a Winter Storm Warning. That means they're confident that weather far from "trivial" will impact their forecast area.

I'm sorry to get you spun up, buddy. ;)

I can also share with y'all that your state government does not believe this event will be "trivial." In fact, the state emergency management council is being activated and state resources are being put in place as agencies prepare to assist impacted communities by this storm. It's being taken very serious here in Austin.

Thanks for that update, Portastorm. It is certainly warranted in our part of the world. We all must remember that Winter Weather events way down here in the Southern half of Texas are a rarity. Add to that the vast bridge, overpass and flyovers we have that even the thinnest coating of ice creates a travel nightmare.

Howdy! First time poster LONG time reader..just wanted to say hey and introduce myself! I'm Corey ,just recently moved to kingwood up from Freeport..always wanted to get above I-10 cuz I figured when it came to for winter I would have a little better chance of seeing something frozen instead of being down by the coast lol..so here's to loads of snow and ice to come!!

I think the 'front' is through, not the really cold stuff. Im in Sugar Land and the wind has shifted and temps are slowly dropping.
