There have been hurricanes that have rapidly intensified from tropical depression or tropical storm before landfall on Texas. They are usually small storms.

Hurricane 1 (1929)
Freeport Hurricane (1932)
Hurricane 3 (1936)
Surprise Hurricane (1943)
Glasscock (1955) On the outer circulation of Hurricane Gladys.
Chantal (1989)
Jerry (1989)
Humberto (2007)

The 1932 hurricane became a Category 4 hurricane. Could this happen again? Absolutely.

"As Hurricane Gladys made landfall in Mexico, on September 5, 1955, another circular storm made landfall south of Baffin Bay on September 7, 1955. The storm was dubbed by residence as “Hurricane Glasscock”. Glasscock was named after the nearest oil platform from shore, which was 15 miles east of Port Aransas. "

" :?: " Glasscock? Named from the nearest oil platform? I know we did'nt name storms in the early 1900's, but 1955 we still didnt name storms from our usual lists? What was the first "Storm" (not hurricane) that had it's very first NHC name?

There was Claudette 2003. Intensifying quite quickly as it moved into Matagorda Bay. Another few hours and it would have made Cat 3.
