It's going to get cold and likely stay that way for a while. You folks certainly have a potential freezing rain/sleet event Sunday into early Monday. We know from past experience that models struggle with dense Artic airmasses. I believe we'll see a brief relaxation late January, and then plunge back into a very chilly February. Remember that early February is prime time for wintry mischief for SE Texas. Fingers crossed that heavy snow falls across the Lone Star State!

I have seen forecast models struggle with freezes time and time again.

I’ve heard stories of 73 and 77-78 winters. My father played a football playoff game in heavy snow in 1977. I kinda remember, vaguely, the ‘83 December and I certainly remember ‘85 and ‘89.
The 1970s winter were colder. Winter of 1972-1973 and 1977-1978 were El Nino winters. 1977-1978 is one of the colder winters on record. 1972-1973 was a strong Eastern Equatorial El Nino. 1977-1978 was a weak Modoki El Nino. 1983-1984 and 1984-1985 were weak to moderate La Nina. 1989-1990 was neutral.
The 00z GFS and CMC are a good 15 degrees warmer than the NAM, no frozen precip here lol, seems like a good bet to just use the mesocale guidance from here on out

I was visiting a close friend in CS that storm. What a storm.
Back then, few students and dudes with trucks would attempt to traverse the icy roads - nearly an inch thick. We had ice storms in NC every year, so I ventured out gingerly and was able to drive into A&M, and pick up a couple of groceries. The "incline" on Texas Ave between Holleman and Harvey Rd was a little tricky.
We're stocking up tomorrow, because if Monday (and Tuesday) resemble anything similar to '97 - I'm staying put. The town, university, and "confidence" of people driving without experience in these conditions has exploded.

The Ohio River froze in 1977-1978. We had massive snow storms in NC (1 foot variety) two years in a row.

GFS brought the late week winter storm back. LOL. As far as Monday's system goes we will know a lot more tomorrow and Saturday when the system is in range of more mesoscale models.

I used to live on Holleman right by Texas. There was an HEB across the street when I was a student, and Hastings / Freebies too. We had a really bad ice storm sometime in the early 2007 that completely froze everything over for a couple days.
