Ptarmigan wrote: Wed Jan 10, 2024 9:18 pm I know with past freezing rain events, trees have fallen onto powerlines causing power outages. They often cause roads to be dangerous to travel. I can even recall thunder during freezing rain.
If we get ice accumulations on power lines, expect power outages.
I am thinking that could happen, which could be a problem.
Yes, and especially with the entire state being affected with much colder temps. We are expecting outages.

Getting into the range of the mesoscale models. The 0Z NAM has the front moving into SE Texas late Saturday night and nearing the coast by Sunday morning...Not uncommon at all for this kind of fronts to move in quicker than what the global models show. So I'm not surprised at all that the NAM is faster than the globals.

I have a feeling this is going to be worse, meaning lower temps and ice, than what is being forecasted.

Ensembles coming in more bullish, and now almost every member of the GEPS has a winter storm

Does the Euro still show a winter storm of sorts?

ICON and CMC in agreement. CMC and Euro in agreement about precip.

We've been seeing this potential for weeks. The last half of January will be full of set-ups that could be very interesting. I suspect the active pattern will continue and the cold will stick around. Our wintry precip chances are obviously better in the upper 20s than 8°F in SETX.

Yep, I'm seeing colder and wetter all the way around. Local KBTX is calling for 3 straight days of 30s, teens for lows. Chance of wintry stuff...and they are conservative about these things.
