A few areas of light sleet and perhaps a flurry or two between Corpus Christi and Brownsville this morning with no accumulation. Temps in the low to upper 20s across SE TX.. Currently setting at 27F in League City. A few upper teens N of Houston metro. The big difference is the wind this morning which is mostly calm or very light but its still very cold outside so dress warm. The big warm-up begins tomorrow with 70s by Friday along with rain chances with increasing GOM moisture.

Mike, what were the Lake Charles/Ft Polk/Kinder and other Parishes in SW Louisiana? We have a lot of folks from the Arcadia Region now following our Board. I am also interested in the New Orleans area. That Regions also has a lot of folks that follow our Board and even some member from the LIX forecast area.

Made it to 24.6F here, our low occurred at 345am. Temps started to slowly rise after that and now up to 30.2. It was still the coldest night in 3 years but under more ideal conditions we would have made a run at teens.

What do the models show after the moderated warm up? Are there more cold fronts in our future?

Accumulating sleet near Corpus...interesting!!
Ok, something frozen fell from the sky overnight at my house. I have what appears to be frozen snowflakes all over my windshield. Anyone have an explanation for this? If anyone wants to posts the pic, send me a message with your number and I will text it to you.

Morning Update from Jeff:
Hard Freeze Warning verifying well this morning even with the overnight cloud cover.
So far as of 600am temperatures have fallen to :
Huntsville: 19
College Station: 19
Conroe: 16
BUSH IAH: 22
Sugar Land: 22
Tomball: 21
Victoria: 24
Wharton: 20
Brenham: 20
Cleveland: 17
Bay City: 22
Hobby: 25
Galveston 28
Should see low temperatures for the date established in the next 1-2 hours…but at the moment the daily records look safe.
Of note:
The low yesterday of 21 at College Station tied the record set in 1970
The low of 20 at Austin Bergstrom broke the record of 22 in 1972
The high temperature of 36 at BUSH IAH was the coldest high for Jan 6…previous record was 38 in 1971
The high of 37 at Hobby Airport yesterday also set a new record for the coldest maximum…previous record was 39 in 1971
Waco set a new record low of 16…previous record was 20 in 1910…a 104 year record.
The national US low temperature yesterday was -37F in Babbitt, MN
The national US low temperature for Sunday was -40F at Embarrass, MN
Bitter cold arctic high that has brought extreme cold to much of the Midwest and now eastern US will begin to move eastward today allowing winds to become E this afternoon and SE tonight. This onshore flow will begin to increase moisture levels from their bone dry state (dewpoints in the 10’s) to levels more accustom across the southern US. Do not expect another freeze tonight as onshore winds and increasing clouds should not allow much of a temperature fall tonight…in fact coastal locations may see near steady temperatures overnight. Warm up commences in earnest on Wednesday as warm air advection increases ahead of lee side Rockies low pressure troughing which will displace the arctic dome across the plains. Highs will recover into the 50’s locally and it is uphill into the weekend with lows by Friday likely only in the mid 50’s and highs in the low to mid 70’s.
Bigger question is when to bring in rain chances and how much rain over the next 2-4 days. Not a lot of upper support for rainfall on Wednesday yet model guidance is showing 40% mainly in the afternoon which goes up even more Thursday-Saturday. Think a few scattered “streamer: showers will be possible on Wednesday by late afternoon as moisture increases and mainly west of I-45 and then expanding to much of the area by Thursday morning. Even though high rain chances are shown on Thursday…think it will be mainly light and possibly only in the morning.
Upper level storm system currently offshore of the west coast approaches by Friday and digs down into northern MX. EURO and CMC models want to close off and slow/stall the system SW of TX into the weekend and the GFS model looks to be trending some in that direction. Jet dynamics increase across the region Friday so expect an increase in northward moving showers off the Gulf. Rain chances will peak at some point late Friday into Saturday depending on when exactly the storm system moves across TX along with an associated cool front.
Rainfall amounts Wed-Sat will average .5 to 1.0 inch across much of the area especially west of I-45. Could see a few higher amounts if thunderstorms are able to develop late Friday into Saturday.

I guess we're entering our "January thaw" period...hopefully it's only for at most 10 days.

It looks like about a 10 day January thaw, then the pattern may flip as the Arctic reloads...
