1980 - It was the coldest Christmas Day of modern record in the northeastern U.S. Temperatures as cold as 36 degrees below zero were reported in New York State, and as the sharp cold front swept southeastward the temperature at Boston MA plunged from 34 degrees to seven degrees below zero during the day. (David Ludlum)
1982 - High pressure off the Carolina Coast brought a southerly flow of warm air ahead of a cold front from Texas to the Ohio Valley and the East Coast. Many locations reported record high temperatures for the date including: Beaumont-Port Arthur, TX: 80°, Tallahassee, FL: 80°-Tied, Lake Charles, LA: 79°, Macon, GA: 78°, Montgomery, AL: 78°, Athens, GA: 77°-Tied, Charleston, WV: 76°, Huntington, WV: 76°, Columbus, GA: 76°, Knoxville, TN: 76°, Jackson, KY: 76°, Bristol, TN: 74°, Oak Ridge, TN: 74°, Birmingham, AL: 73°, Galveston, TX: 73°-Tied, Lynchburg, VA: 72°, Sterling (Dulles Airport), VA: 71°, Wilmington, DE: 70°, Atlantic City, NJ: 70°, Lexington, KY: 70°, Paducah, KY: 69°, Elkins, WV: 68°, Evansville, IN: 68°, Roanoke, VA: 68°-Tied, Beckley, WV: 66°, Cleveland, OH: 66°, Youngstown, OH: 66°, Alpena, MI: 65° (broke previous record by 17 degrees), Flint, MI: 65°, Grand Rapids, MI: 65°, Lansing, MI: 65°, South Bend, IN: 65°, Buffalo, NY: 64°, Akron, OH: 64°, Detroit, MI: 64°, Fort Wayne, IN: 64° (broke previous record by 11 degrees), Chicago, IL: 64°, New York (Central Park), NY: 64°-Tied, Toledo, OH: 63°, Mansfield, OH: 62°, Springfield, IL: 62°, Muskegon, MI: 61° (broke previous record by 12 degrees), Milwaukee, WI: 61°, Houghton Lake, MI: 59° (broke previous record by 11 degrees), Rochester, NY: 58°, Rockford, IL: 58°, Madison, WI: 56° and Ste. Extensive flooding was developing across much of the state of Louisiana as rain began on Christmas night and continued through December 28th. Storm total rainfall amounts of around 15" fell in a large swath from near Monroe southwestward to Lake Charles. In the following weeks, major flooding occurred on the Beouf River near Fort Necessity, minor flooding occurred on the Beouf at Alto, and the Tensas River crested above flood stage at Newlight. (NWS Jackson)
1983 - It was the coldest Christmas Day of modern record for the central and eastern U.S. More than 125 cities reported record low temperatures for the date, and thirty-four of those cities reported all-time records for the month of December. The temperature plunged to one degree below zero at Huntsville AL, and dipped to 14 degrees at Galveston TX. Snow covered the ground from the Pacific Northwest through much of the Great Plains Region to the Northern Appalachains. (The National Weather Summary)
1987 - Residents of Tucson, AZ, awoke to a white Christmas for the first time in forty-seven years of records, as a winter storm blanketed the area with up to four inches of snow. While heavy rain inundated Arkansas, freezing rain was reported from northwest Texas to southwestern Missouri, with an inch of ice reported at Harrison AR. Unseasonably mild weather prevailed in the southeastern U.S. Seven cities reported record high temperatures for the date. For the second day in a row McAllen TX was the hot spot in the nation with an afternoon high of 91 degrees. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)
1988 - A massive winter storm made for a very white Christmas in the western U.S. Las Vegas, NV, reported snow on the ground for the first time of record. Periods of snow over a five day period left several feet of new snow on the ground of ski areas in Colorado, with 68 inches reported at Wolf Creek Pass. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)
1989 - It was a record cold Christmas Day for parts of the southeastern U.S. Morning lows of zero degrees at Wilmington, NC, and five degrees below zero at Jacksonville NC established all-time records for those two locations. Miami Beach FL equalled a December record established the previous morning with a low of 33 degrees. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)
2003 - Heavy rains affected areas of southern California that were just recently ravaged by wildfires in October. The downpour produced flash flooding that resulted in mudslides, taking the lives of 15 people at area campgrounds in San Bernardino (AFP).
2004 - Snow fell on Christmas Day in Deep South Texas. Snow totaled 4.4 inches in Corpus Christi, making it the second White Christmas ever. Farther north, Victoria had their first white Christmas on record when 12.5 inches of snow fell.
2006 - Severe thunderstorms produced four tornadoes in Florida. Columbia, Pasco, Lake and Volusia counties were hardest-hit, including the Daytona Beach area. A tornado generated considerable damage on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, delaying the start of the spring semester (Orlando Business Journal).
2010 - Up to 32 inches of snow and blizzard conditions affected parts of the eastern U.S. on December 25th27th. A state of emergency was declared in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Maine. In New York City, up to 24.5 inches of snow fell, effectively shutting down rail lines, major airports, and bus services. Thousands of flights were cancelled and stranded subway riders were forced to spend a night in unheated train cars. One person was reported killed in Maine due to the weather conditions. (NCDC)

For January 28th
1922 - The "Knickerbocker" storm immobilized the city of Washington D.C. The storm produced 28 inches of snow in 32 hours, and the heavy snow caused the roof of the Knickerbocker movie theatre to collapse killing 96 persons. (David Ludlum)
1948 - Ice storm (Jan. 24th-31st) causes considerable damage from Arkansas to South Carolina; at least 30 deaths and $20 million damage.
1963 - The low of -34 degrees at Cynthiana, KY, equalled the state record established just four days earlier at Bonnieville. (The Weather Channel)
1968 - The Columbia River froze in Oregon. Pedestrian traffic and sleighs were able to cross from Vancouver to Portland on the frozen river.
1973 - Tornadoes touched down in Polk, Orange, Osceola, and Brevard Counties in Central Florida. In Orlando, hundreds were left homeless and 16 people were injured by a tornado crossing the southwest side of the city. Another tornado ripped off the Beacon Tower at the Titusville Airport and damaged many signs. A tornado near Dade City injured a man in a mobile home. Another Tornado struck the Ixora Park area of Northwest Osceola County damaging 300 homes injuring seven people.
1977 - The Great Buffalo Blizzard started like many other snow squalls from Lake Erie, but during this storm, strong northwest winds lifted up the snow piled on frozen Lake Erie and blasted the city with it. As winds strengthened from the south ahead of a sharp cold front, about 2 inches of new powder had accumulated on top of the 37 inch snowpack and drifts from previous storms dating back to Christmas. City streets were already clogged so badly that the National Guard was called in even before anyone knew about the coming blizzard. During the morning the temperature rose rapidly from 5° at midnight to 26° at 11am. At 11:35am, the front passed Buffalo Airport. In a short time the visibility dropped from three-quarters of a mile to zero and the wind shifted and increased from south at 16 mph to southwest at 29 mph with gusts to 49 mph. The temperature fell 26° to 0° in just over four hours. The blizzard reached its worst severity during the late afternoon as winds at the airport averaged 46 mph gusting to 69 mph. Gusts of 75 mph were recorded at Niagara Falls airport. An average speed of 46 mph and temperature of -1° resulted in a wind chill factor of -55° to -60° which contributed to the deaths of 29 people, many found frozen in their half-buried cars during the four day ordeal. Blizzard or near blizzard conditions prevailed on and off for the next three days ending about midday February 1st. Daily peak gusts of 51, 52, 58, and 46 mph were recorded on the 29th through the 1st. When the sun finally came out for good on the first of February, its cold light revealed a scene of incredible desolation in the Buffalo area and to a slightly lesser degree in much of the seven western county area. The city as well as most other communities banned traffic for several days. The army was called in from Fort Bragg, NC to augment the number of National Guard troops which had been called before the storm. Some of the eastern suburbs of Buffalo, particularly Lancaster, were buried, to the roof in some cases. President Carter declared seven western counties and two eastern Lake Ontario counties a federal disaster area, the first time ever for a snowstorm in the U.S. The snow at Buffalo airport totaled about 12 inches from January 28th to February 1st but much of this is believed to be from existing snow lying on the frozen surface of Lake Erie being blown into the Buffalo area.
The same strong cold front moved across the Mid-Atlantic region during late afternoon and early evening accompanied by strong winds, snow squalls and plunging temperatures. Wind gusts reached over 60 mph and, combined with snow squalls, brought near blizzard conditions. Allentown, PA reported a wind gust of 67 mph, Philadelphia and Pottstown, PA to 60 mph, and Reading, PA hit 58 mph, where 3 airplanes were flipped over. Temperatures near 40 degrees ahead of the front dropped as much as 15 to 20 degrees in 1 hour, 25 to 30 degrees in 2 hours, and up to 40 degrees in 5 hours.
Beginning the previous day through this date, strong northwest winds gusting to 55 mph combined with sub-zero temperatures and one to two inches of snow to bring blizzard conditions to northern and eastern Iowa. Travel was halted as most roads and highways were blocked with drifts to six feet or more. Wind chill factors of -60° to -90° were common with many cases of frost bite reported. There were also numerous reports of broken water lines due to freezing.
The wind-chill temperature dropped to -78° at Minneapolis, MN during the morning, perhaps the lowest on record in that city. The blizzard of January 1977, in and around Buffalo, NY, was so severe that winds up to 73 mph broke windows in homes, which were then quickly filled with blowing and drifting snow.
1979 - An upper level trough brought chilly, unsettled weather to the West. Las Vegas received 2.4 inches of snow. Big Bear Lake, CA dropped to -18°, a record for the day and their second lowest temperature on record.
1986 - Space Shuttle Challenger launches from Cape Canaveral, FL at 11:39am EST. The lows that morning was in the 20s and reached 36 degrees at time of launch. 73 seconds into the flight, Challenger explodes in front of horrified spectators and school children who watched it live. All seven astronauts on board died in that tragic day. The cold weather contributed to the weakening of the o-ring.
1987 - A storm moving out of the Central Rockies into the Northern Plains Region produced up to a foot of snow in the Colorado Rockies, and wind gusts to 99 mph at Boulder CO. High winds in Colorado caused 5.6 million dollars damage. (National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)
1988 - Barometric pressure readings of 30.55 inches at Miami FL, 30.66 inches at Tampa FL, and 30.72 inches at Apalachicola FL were all-time record high readings for those locations. (National Weather Summary)
1989 - Nome, AK, reported an all-time record low reading of 54 degrees below zero, and the temperature at Fairwell AK dipped to 69 degrees below zero. Deadhorse AK reported a morning low of 49 degrees below zero, and with a wind chill reading of 114 degrees below zero. In the Lower Forty-eight States, a winter storm over Colorado produced up to 15 inches of snow around Denver. (National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)
A Siberian air mass continued to grip Alaska and western Canada with extremely dangerous cold and wind chills. Nome, AK tied their all-time record low reading of -54° set the previous day and the temperature at Fairwell, AK dipped to -69°. Deadhorse, AK reported a morning low of -49°, and with a wind chill reading of -114° (old scale) and Pelly Bay, Northwest Territories Canada fell to -60° with a wind chill temperature of -132° (old scale).
Alaskan Locations reporting all-time record low temperatures included: Bethel, AK: -48°, King Salmon, AK: -48° and Kodiak, AK: -16° (broke previous daily record by 18 degrees).
Locations in Alaska reporting daily record lows included: McGrath: -58°-Tied, Barrow: -45°, Homer: -24°, Cold Bay: -7° and St. Paul Island: -7°.
Across the lower 48, a winter storm over Colorado produced up to 15 inches of snow around Denver.
1990 - Strong and gusty winds prevailed across the northwestern U.S., and heavy snow continued over the mountains of Washington State and Oregon. In Idaho, Mullan received seven inches of snow, and winds gusted to 65 mph southeast of Burley. Heavy rain soaked coastal sections of western Oregon. Rainfall totals of 1.20 inches at Portland and 1.57 inches at Eugene were records for the date. Winds in Oregon gusting to 60 mph downed power lines in Umatilla County knocking out power to more than 13,000 homes, just prior to the kick-off of the "Super Bowl" game. (National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)
1999 - Finland's coldest night occurred as the town of Kittilia dropped to -60.7°.
2000 - A major winter storm brought snow and ice to Arkansas which began on the 27th of the month. The storm came after a prolonged period of warmer than normal weather and no measurable snow for almost three years in some areas. It was the heaviest snow in 12 years, with 4 to 8 inches or more common. Parts of southern Arkansas received over a foot of snow.
2004 - On this date through the 31st, a 3-day snowstorm dumped 86 inches of snow at Parish, NY located about 25 miles north of Syracuse.
The temperature plummeted to -49° at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada, their coldest reading in 33 years.
2009 - The temperature at Adelaide, Australia soared to 114°, making it the location's hottest day in 70 years.

THE FOLLOWING REPRESENTS A HISTORICAL SNAPSHOT OF SOME OF THE
COLDEST TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE STATE OF TEXAS, AS WELL AS A
BRIEF REVIEW OF IMPORTANT WINTER WEATHER PRODUCTS FROM THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LUBBOCK.
FEBRUARY 1899 WAS A VERY COLD MONTH. DURING THE PERIOD OF FEBRUARY 11TH THROUGH THE 13TH, AN ARCTIC AIRMASS RACED SOUTH FROM THE NORTHERN AND CENTRAL PLAINS STATES INTO THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE BITTERLY COLD AIRMASS PLUNGED AS FAR SOUTH AS THE UPPER TEXAS COAST WHERE A THIN LAYER OF ICE COATED MOST OF GALVESTON BAY ON FEBRUARY 12TH.
SOME OF THE COLDEST WEATHER ON RECORD FOR THE STATE OF TEXAS
OCCURRED ON FEBRUARY 12TH. IN FACT, THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE IN THE
STATE OCCURRED RIGHT HERE IN WEST TEXAS. ON THE MORNING OF
FEBRUARY 12TH, THE THERMOMETER PLUMMETED TO 23 DEGREES BELOW ZERO AT TULIA IN SWISHER COUNTY. THERE WERE UNOFFICIAL REPORTS OF LOW TEMPERATURES REACHING 30 DEGREES BELOW ZERO IN THE NORTHERN PANHANDLE.
THE ALL TIME RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE ESTABLISHED AT TULIA WAS TIED
YEARS LATER WHEN ANOTHER ARCTIC AIRMASS PLUNGED INTO THE SOUTH
PLAINS. IN ADDITION, THE SMALL TOWN OF SEMINOLE IN GAINES COUNTY
REPORTED A TEMPERATURE OF 23 DEGREES BELOW ZERO ON FEBRUARY 8TH 1933.
THE YEARS 1899 AND 1933 WERE NOT THE ONLY YEARS FOR RECORD COLD
ACROSS THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF CITIES WITH
CORRESPONDING RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES AND DATES OF OCCURRENCE.
ABILENE..................9 BELOW ZERO.....SET IN 1947
AMARILLO................16 BELOW ZERO.....SET IN 1899
AUSTIN...................2 BELOW ZERO.....SET IN 1949
BEAUMONT/PORT ARTHUR....11 DEGREES........SET IN 1930
BROWNSVILLE.............12 DEGREES........SET IN 1899
CORPUS CHRISTI..........11 DEGREES........SET IN 1899
DALLAS/FORT WORTH........8 BELOW ZERO.....SET IN 1899
DEL RIO.................10 DEGREES........SET IN 1989
EL PASO..................8 BELOW ZERO.....SET IN 1962
GALVESTON................8 DEGREES........SET IN 1899
HOUSTON..................5 DEGREES........SET IN 1930 AND 1940
LUBBOCK.................17 BELOW ZERO.....SET IN 1933

WACO.....................5 BELOW ZERO.....SET IN 1949 AND 1899
WICHITA FALLS...........12 BELOW ZERO.....SET IN 1947
THE COMBINATION OF STRONG WIND AND VERY COLD TEMPERATURES CAN PRODUCE DANGEROUS WIND CHILL VALUES. THE WIND CHILL INDEX IS DEFINED AS THE COOLING EFFECT ON THE BODY RESULTING FROM A COMBINATION OF TEMPERATURE AND WIND. WIND CHILL IS BASED ON THE RATE OF HEAT LOSS FROM EXPOSED SKIN. THE THRESHOLD FOR DANGEROUS WIND CHILL TEMPERATURE IS -18 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, AT WHICH POINT FROSTBITE CAN OCCUR ON EXPOSED SKIN WITHIN 30 MINUTES. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL ISSUE A WIND CHILL WARNING FOR SUCH INSTANCES.
IN ADDITION TO RECORD COLD AND BITING WIND CHILLS, THE STATE OF
TEXAS EXPERIENCES VARIOUS WINTER WEATHER HAZARDS. ON CHRISTMAS EVE 2004, A STRONG UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM CROSSED THE MEXICAN PLATEAU AND PRODUCED HEAVY SNOW AND ICE FROM BROWNSVILLE THROUGH CORPUS CHRISTI AND VICTORIA. RESIDENTS IN VICTORIA AWAKENED CHRISTMAS MORNING TO OVER A FOOT OF FRESH SNOW COVER.
HEAVY SNOWS ARE COMMON ACROSS THE TEXAS PANHANDLE. ALTHOUGH NOT AS LIKELY ACROSS THE SOUTH PLAINS, THEY DO OCCUR. IN JANUARY OF 1983, A WINTER STORM DROPPED A RECORD 16.3 INCHES AT THE LUBBOCK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN 24 HOURS. IN ADDITION TO THE DAILY RECORD SNOWFALL, A TOTAL OF 41.2 INCHES FELL DURING THE 1982/1983 SEASON. THIS IS THE ALL TIME RECORD FOR LUBBOCK. HEAVY SNOW OFTEN LEADS TO HAZARDOUS TRAVELING CONDITIONS. ADDITIONALLY, WINTER WEATHER HAZARDS AND RELATED IMPACTS ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE TO TRAVELERS. FOR INSTANCE, SHOVELING HEAVY SNOW CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS OR EVEN FATAL INJURY FOR THOSE NOT NORMALLY ACTIVE.
WHEN EXTREME WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE OR IMMINENT,
YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE WILL EITHER ISSUE A
WINTER WEATHER WATCH, WARNING OR ADVISORY. A WATCH MEANS THAT
CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE IN THE NEXT 36 HOURS. A WARNING MEANS
THAT WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN THE NEXT 12
HOURS. IF SNOW OR A WINTRY MIX IS FORECAST, AND NOT EXPECTED TO
DELIVER A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT TO LIFE OR PROPERTY, AN ADVISORY WILL
BE ISSUED FOR THE AREA.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LUBBOCK WISHES EVERYONE A SAFE AND HEALTHY WINTER SEASON. COME JOIN US AT: WWW.WEATHER.GOV/LUBBOCK

The February 1899 freeze is biggest freeze to hit America. It probably happens every 200 to 500 years. It is no doubt a black swan event.srainhoutx wrote:THE FOLLOWING REPRESENTS A HISTORICAL SNAPSHOT OF SOME OF THE
COLDEST TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE STATE OF TEXAS, AS WELL AS A
BRIEF REVIEW OF IMPORTANT WINTER WEATHER PRODUCTS FROM THE
