We have a Tropical Storm out in the Atlantic.
Name will be Dorian.
Too early to tell where it will go and if it will survive dry air/sheer
but something to keep an eye on.....

Will update as storm chugs along....

Good time to go over YOUR PLAN, in any event.

There is no reason to sweat it out without AC this summer

Please read and hit the link - share if you know others who may need this assistance:

Electricity Assistance for low-income Texans
Low-income Texans outside of Austin can qualify for an 82 percent reduction in their electricity bills if they apply by Aug. 13. Customers with Austin Energy or electric co-ops don’t qualify for the electricity credits because they didn’t pay the surcharge that was created in 1999 and ends Sept. 1. Customers who can choose their electricity providers are eligible for the credits on their bills. In Central Texas, that includes customers in Round Rock and other parts of Williamson County.

To qualify, a customer must be at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty line. For a family of four that would be an income of $29,438.

Eighty-five percent of the Texans who would qualify are automatically enrolled because they are receiving food stamps or Medicaid. You still may qualify, but you must sign up for the program. Forms are available by calling 1-866-454-8387 or at www.liteuptexas.org . The state’s 42 legal aid offices or www.Texaslawhelp.org also have forms.

Texas Pirate

Hey EVERYONE
Hope you got some rain this weekend (August 9-11) :D

Some weather models are starting to sniff out a tropical system that
may end up in the GOM by the end of the week.

Where it goes, nobody, at this point, truly knows.
You'll hear a lot of talk in the meantime.

With school beginning soon, I'm afraid people will focus more
on buying school supplies, then essential emergency supplies.

NOW is the time to make sure you have everything you need
(or stock up when buying school supplies)
And YOU have a PLAN in place.

Once it hits the GOM, tastes that hot water, and truly develops
it may be too late. I've always said 'Once in the GOM its not the time to
create a plan....its already too late."

So, while we watch the next couple of days on what will develop
where it will go, take the time to go over your plan
YOU KNOW YOUR DISABILITY BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE.
And WHAT YOU NEED TO STAY ALIVE.
Make sure you stay weather aware.

Dramatic? Yeah. But, true.

For us in Texas, these next 5 weeks is generally our Hurricane Time.
It's the peak of the season, storms are coming off of Africa or CV (Cape Verde) storms
Like Ike, Rita, Katrina, etc.
Storms can pop up in the GOM...anything is possible. August-September.
However, CANE season ends November, its a rarity we get a major hit in October/November
But, hey I aint Mother Nature.

So, get your plan out
Register if you are in a mandatory evacuation area (211 or local Office of Emergency Management in your county)
and need the bus to get you out of dodge.
OR make sure you have a place to go with friends/family

IF you are in an area that you are told to "hunker down"
and don't have a generator and depend on electricity to live, LEAVE.

That's the review. We'll see what develops.
Couple of days will tell us.
But its always good to go over that plan.

Have a good Monday.

Hello Everyone,

Well that rain tonight (8/14) was most refreshing and welcoming.

Back to update you on whats going on - there's two areas of concern that I'm sure you've heard about

92L is headed to the Yucatan then the GOM where it goes from there, is any weather models guess
Yes, most weather models and pros keep it east of us, but then again, once its in the GOM its
fair game and we must be weather aware. The consensus is anywhere from FROM LA to FLA.
However, one model wants to bring it into Mexico. We shall see. Fun, huh?

93L hot off the coast of Africa was declared TD5 tonight - that's way off, but she's already been
upgraded - maybe get the name, Erin, unless 92L gets it. Following this?
As stated, TD5 is a bit off, but again, its coming from an area that generally creates
the big ones.

Tis the season. Be weather aware. Go over your plans.

Enjoy this lovely rain with no name.

Friday August 16

Hello Folks,

92L sure seems to be giving the weather models/mets a fit.
Its coming off the Yucatan and some models have it going either to TX/MX border or LA
In any event, From Mexico to LA we are all on the watch.

Please make sure you have your supplies and your plan.
Be aware of the weather this weekend - anything can and sometimes does happen
with these storms in the GOM.

Here is an update from our NWS; its a briefing on the event - and I hope you can open it.

Take care and be aware - Hoping for some nice rain that we desperately need....

Hello Peeps~

There is *HOPE* in our forecast for rain this weekend.

I know we've heard it before - but a tropical wave is headed this way.
Right now, the NHC gives it a 20% chance of development- hopefully
Sunday....I know...I know...

Please keep your eyes on the weather this weekend. Be weather aware and prepared.

We're winding down August with no canes that have hit the CONUS
Tomorrow will be the 8th anniversary of Katrina....let us feel blessed
we sailed thru August.

So far.

Below is just another reminder of preparedness - sent to me by FEMA
We are entering our "peak season" and Texas has had some whoppers in September.
Let's hope September brings us some RAIN with NO NAME....we need it.

Austin and San Antonio are in very bad shape with drought.

Individual Needs May Vary
When making emergency plans, remember that each person’s needs and abilities are unique. If you or someone you know has access or functional needs, additional steps should be taken to stay safe, healthy, mobile and independent during a disaster. Individuals with access and functional needs include:

Those who are hard of hearing, of limited sight or with limited English proficiency;
•Single parents;
•People without vehicles; and
•People with special dietary needs.

Find out about assistance programs that may be available in your community and register in advance with your local office of emergency services, non-profits groups and health departments.

Stay mobile and independent by including items in your disaster kit that meet your needs such as:
•Medical prescriptions;
•Extra eyeglasses and hearing aids;
•Written descriptions of service needs; and
•Batteries and chargers for assistance devices.

More ways to plan for those with access and functional needs is available in the “Prepare For Emergencies Now, Information For People With Disabilities” guide.

Well, with our temps soaring this Labor Day weekend

Think again: Don't go swimming at the following beaches in Galveston.

Please take a moment and take this SURVEY.....

It can only help us, help you..

ACTION: FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency Distributes Important Survey for People with Disabilities -- on October 13, 2013, the United Nations (UN) International Day for Disaster Reduction will focus on the issues surrounding some one billion of the world's people who live with disabilities and disaster risks. These persons, by-and-large, still have no significant representation in the planning and decision-making processes to reduce these risks or builds resilience. Given the lack of data on disability issues generally, The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) is conducting this survey to ascertain the needs of persons living with disabilities and disasters.
