More rain over the Gulf of Mexico. It is moving northward. It could be over Houston while you sleep.

From Jeff:
NWS has issued a Flood Warning for the overflow of creeks and widespread flooding along Lake Creek in Grimes and Montgomery Counties.

At 815pm several law enforcement agencies have reported numerous locations of rising water over SW/W Montgomery County and eastern Grimes County likely in association with upstream run-off from heavy rainfall yesterday morning over NW Montgomery County. Numerous roadways are currently flooded and impassable and law enforcement is asking the travel be restricted in the warning area due to widespread flooding ongoing and the potential for persons to become trapped on roadways and require rescue. Numerous smaller creeks appear to be overflow their banks this evening from rainfall that fell over this area late this afternoon.

The following roadways are flooded:

FOR SOUTHWESTERN MONTGOMERY COUNTY...
SUPERIOR ROAD NORTH OF FM-1488
JACKSON ROAD AND HIGHWAY 149 AT CHURCHILL DOWNS
FM-1488 AND HONEA EGYPT ROAD
FM-2054 AND HONEA EGYPT ROAD

FOR NORTHEASTERN WALLER COUNTY...
THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 190 AND FM-2296

FOR SOUTHEASTERN GRIMES COUNTY...
FM-362 AT FULKINGER ROAD
LAKESIDE ROAD AT MACEDONIA
LAKESIDE ROAD AT PIN OAK
LAKESIDE ROAD AT ROBINHOOD

More from Jeff:
Since 400pm this afternoon 8-10 inches of rain has fallen over portions of Brazoria and Galveston Counties.

10.1 inches of rain has fallen just south of Angleton and 8.9 inches over San Leon. Significant flash flooding is in progress at these two locations with numerous roadways impassable and water into some homes.

This band of excessive rainfall is very slowly moving northward into southern Harris County and northern Brazoria County with rainfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour. In fact 1 inch of rainfall in 15-min was just recorded near Friendswood. This band appears to be the result of low level mass convergence as SE winds off the Gulf of Mexico collide with NE winds of the inland areas.

Flash flooding in likely under this band of excessive rainfall especially over urban areas.

Do not drive into high water…especially at night…when the depth of water is hardest to determine.

Another update from Jeff - long night ahead:
NWS has issued a Flash Flood Warning for SE Harris County until 115am.

At 1030pm radar shows nearly stationary excessive rainfall along I-45 from Clear Creek to Beltway 8. Radar is indicating rainfall rates under this cell of 2-3 inches per hour and HCFCD FWS gages show rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches in the last 1 hour.

There is almost no cell motion with this area of excessive rainfall and after what has happened this evening over Galveston and Brazoria Counties with upwards of 8-10 inches from similar cells…the short term flash flood threat is extremely high.

Significant street flooding is likely along I-45 between Beltway 8 and the Harris/Galveston County line.

Clear Creek, Turkey Creek, and Beamer Ditch are all quickly responding to the excessive rainfall.

High water rescues are underway currently in the NASA area. Clear Creek at IH-45 just south of NASA is near bankful and likely will go over bankful shortly ..... http://www.harriscountyfws.org/GageDetail/Index/110?R=1

Reports from Friendswood FD indicate Bay Area Blvd. and FM 528 is completely underwater

NASA near Horseman Bayou at bankful and flooding of homes is imminent.

Current MCS and associated shortwave is ejecting off to the northeast just west of Del Rio. HRRR and some of the other mesoscale models are aggressive in developing storms across the northwestern extent of Southwest Texas tomorrow morning, but I am not completely sold on that solution yet. What models are really having trouble with is the coastal axis that is currently moving inland. Low level convergence paired with P-wats reaching the 2.0 inch mark is a troubling trend tonight. Strong moisture advection will continue throughout the night as ridging over the eastern part of the gulf will keep a large fetch of south-southeast winds. Furthermore, models also suggest we could be on the tail-end of a LLJ developing overnight tonight. All these factors will help to contribute to heavy rains crawling northward. It will be interesting to see what effects the shortwave off to the west will have to organization tomorrow morning. Either way it remains a wet forecast.

Paul Robison

The good thing here (am I right about this, folks?) is that the only issue seems to be flooding in low-lying areas. But I haven't seen reports of hail, damaging winds, or tornadoes. There are no mesoscale discussions (is that what they're called?) in effect either. It all seems to be just moderate to heavy rain.

For sure... Looks like a rainy one (duh). The axis is slowly retreating northward so I suspect within the next 2-3 hours the rain will slowly depart the area, but mesoscale models indicate some heavy returns tomorrow. That could be further intensified depending on outflow boundaries and any other convergence zones. Worrisome for areas hit so hard tonight though.
