It will be 6 years in September that we've been in Grimes County.

This is the first year that we have actually seen cicadas. We've never seen walking sticks but this year they are everywhere. The wildflowers in our pasture this year have been different than any of the other years.

I have no clue if this is cyclical or if it is somehow related to the massive rainfall and additional weather and wind from Harvey last year. Perhaps it's just a coincidence but it is curious. Weather and nature are wonderful to behold.

Cicadas are cyclical in the Midwest, appearing once in 13-17 years, often in tandem. They sounded quite loud at the PGA golf tournament in St. Louis. Cicadas in Texas have a lifespan of 2.5-3 years, living on tree sap most of the time. It seems logical that rain, moisture, temperature all affect their life cycle. The males are the noisemakers.

Looks like close but no cigar for showers in CLL today. A broken line is stumbling SE toward Brenham and NW Harris Co.

Today's line is looking less broken... If the showers can only hang together!

Really could use some rain...because the spigot shuts down for the week after this afternoon.

Special Weather Statement
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX

TXZ177-198-199-220000-

605 PM CDT TUE AUG 21 2018

...SIGNIFICANT WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SOUTHEASTERN GRIMES...
NORTHWESTERN MONTGOMERY AND SOUTHERN WALKER COUNTIES UNTIL 700 PM
CDT...

At 605 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from near Willis to near Montgomery to 7 miles
northeast of Anderson. Movement was southwest at 15 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with these storms.

Locations impacted include...
Conroe, Willis, Panorama Village, Cut And Shoot, New Waverly,
Montgomery, Anderson, Woodloch, Todd Mission, Lake Conroe Dam,
Dobbin, Dacus, Plantersville, Roans Prairie and Richards.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

If on or near Lake Conroe, get out of the water and move indoors or
inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles

enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not
be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

Storms are spitting out an outflow. Wonder if they will fall apart before they get here (and like so many times before, reform a fresh line south of me over the city...) I hope not - we need the rain.

Sure enough, everything upstream from me is quickly fading away. New storms to the south. I’ll be running the sprinklers in the morning.

I thought it was suppose to do this during the heat of the day, not overnight. What changed?

Earlier briefing from Jeff:

Strong thunderstorms possible this afternoon over the area as a weak cold front moves southward.

ir mass is undergoing strong heat early this afternoon with temperatures warning through the lower 90’s. Air mass is becoming increasingly unstable and expect showers and thunderstorms to begin to develop in the next few hours along and ahead of the slow southward moving frontal boundary roughly from the Brazos Valley to Lake Livingston area. Additionally, a low level convergence zone is in place along US 59 and just to the south that will act upon the seabreeze front to also develop showers and thunderstorms. Expect these two boundaries to collide over the central counties of the area late this afternoon and focus strong…possibly a severe…thunderstorm through about mid evening.

Soundings for late this afternoon show an “inverted V” profile suggesting downbursts winds will be possible with the stronger storms. Along with gusty winds, frequent lightning and very heavy rainfall can be expected.

Weak frontal zone will push to the coast late this evening and limp offshore Wednesday allowing a drier air mass to filter into the region. Smoke from massive wildfires in western Canada has been trapped in the large mid latitude cyclone over the Midwest and some of this will filter into the region on Wednesday. Otherwise, for mid to late August humidity values for the Wednesday and Thursday period will be lower for this time of year which will allow afternoon temperatures to rise well into the upper 90’s or low 100’s…but it will be a “dry heat”

Hurricane Lane

A fairly significant threat is starting to develop to the Hawaiian Island chain as 150mph hurricane Lane is forecast to round the western edge of a sub-tropical ridge and come close to the islands in the next 72 hours. A hurricane watch has been issued for the SE Islands of the chain at this time. While it is rare for a hurricane to directly impact the islands, a favorable track of previous intense hurricane events in Hawaii is from the S or SSW and Lane will be approaching from the south where water temperatures are warmer compared to the usual approach of a system from the SE or E across cooler waters. The last significant hurricane to hit Hawaii was Iniki in 1992 (a category 4) that struck from the SSW.

Lane is forecast to weaken some as it nears the islands, but is expected to maintained major hurricane status to potentially bring significant impacts to the islands. Due to the general lack of hurricane strikes on the islands many structures are built very low along the coast and would be subject to extensive storm surge and wave action damage from a hurricane hit. Additionally, the high volcanic topography of the islands will enhance tropical rainfall rates even if the system remain offshore to the southwest. The currently forecast track will place much of the low lying population center of Honolulu close to or within the right front quadrant of the storm along with a potentially significant storm surge event into that area.

An isolated thunderstorm across S Central TX this morning W of Houston. An isolated shower or thunderstorm may occur across the coastal areas as the boundary continues to push S today. Most areas will see mostly sunny skies and high temps near 100F.

Sprinkler time again. Looks like a lot of North Harris and South Montgomery got skipped over. Just amazing how that happens.

I jinxed it. The storm collapsed, then jumped over us.

Sprinklers on.

Yeah I noticed lots of sprinklers were running this morning on the way into the office. Looks like I wasn’t the only holdout in the area. And today is one of those “Only in Texas” kinds of days, when a cold front pushes through but the ambient temperature is actually hotter than yesterday!!
