Morning Update from Jeff:

Temperatures below freezing at all locations this morning, but we escaped the hard freeze due to an increase in high and mid level clouds overnight. Still many sites north of I-10 are in the mid to upper 20’s and the warming today will be slower than expected due to the increased cloud cover.

Main upper level trough is passing out over the Gulf this morning with rainfall on local radar out beyond 50 miles offshore. Clouds should gradually decrease during the day, but likely not enough to allow a big warm up…in addition cold air advection continues to drain cold air from the ice and snow covered areas of east TX and LA into the area. Think mid 40’s is about all the area will be able to reach this afternoon. Clearing skies and light winds tonight will allow for another freeze across the region, but does not look like hard freeze criteria…probably upper 20’s to lower 30’s.

Arctic cold dome pushes eastward Thursday allowing warming SE winds and moisture to start to return. Should see highs push back into the lower 60’s by afternoon under mainly sunny skies. Nice weather…at least with the sun…will be short lived as returning moisture and lift begin to produce isolated showers by Friday afternoon across the region. Additionally, recent cold spells have really cooled the nearshore waters and returning higher dewpoints could generate that pesky sea fog along the coast and spreading inland as early as Friday evening.

Weekend is looking modestly wet with moisture flowing northward off the Gulf and an incoming front adding lift by Sunday. Expect showers on Saturday with maybe a few thunderstorms on Sunday. Looks warm through at least Saturday with highs in the 70’s and lows in the 50’s but mainly cloudy with passing rain.

Temperatures cool Sunday into Monday with the cold frontal passage, but this air mass is not of arctic origins so do not expect freezing weather or freezing precipitation. However the front does stall out over the Gulf waters and a coastal trough forms early next week bringing more sustained wet conditions and cool temperatures to the region. Highs Monday and Tuesday look to be in the 50’s with lows in the 40’s with the potential for drizzle, light rain, and showers spreading inland off the western Gulf. Rain chances may need to be raised for the weekend and early next week period if models continue to trend wetter.

Far range extended have shown some additional shots of arctic air into the US during early February, but for now the model agreement is pretty low.

Note: After talking with WFO forecasters yesterday, none of those that have been there in the past 20 years or so can remember issuing two Winter Storm Warnings for the area within 4 days of each other. Looking back the closest I could find would be 1973 when 3 winter storms impacted the region in January and February. The last 2 were 7 days apart and both brought 1.4 inches of snow to Houston (2-10-73 and 2-17-73).

28.8F here in Clute, not sure why but there is a cold pocket over Brazoria county tonight. Angleton is reporting 25 already...our dewpoint is 19F.
