Hurricane Carla From 9/10/1961
Here is a satellite image of Carla from September 10, 1961. I cannot see the eye in this one.

Hard to believe that the NWS/NHC did not want to show the radar live of Carla as they were afraid it would panic the public...
I wonder if they did show the radar live of Carla, would less lives of been lost?wxdata wrote:Hard to believe that the NWS/NHC did not want to show the radar live of Carla as they were afraid it would panic the public...

It was show on live TV after a threat of Court Order IIRC.

Do a search Ptarmigan.
Remember it was a different time and TV was still very 'new' to the Houston Area and radar was also 'new' to the general public. . Dan Rather (KHOU) went to the old NWS Office and finally showed "Live" radar images on TV for the first time of a hurricane to the public. We also had been following Carla for 3 days as it meandered off the Middle TX Coast.

I remember (rather fuzzily) Dan Rather's reports from the old NWS Galveston office at the main Post Office Building. I do remember the radar image of Carla. Being 4 1/2 years old at the time, it all seemed like a big adventure to me. I can also say that Carla instilled my interest in weather, especially hurricanes.
Years later, KHOU ran a promo piece with some of the Carla footage, with Rather saying, "There is the hurricane eye", as the camera showed the screen of the then state of the art WSR-57 radar.
