The 12Z Canadian paints a similar picture as the NAM and GFS suggesting a damp and dreary Holiday Weekend across the eastern half of the Lone Star State. The upper low appears to trek slowly E via that guidance in a somewhat fashion the GFS solution offered through Monday.

Light rain beginning as lift is increasing across SE TX. Lots of widespread rain through Sunday night leading to Santa IFR conditions. This is when Rudolph's red beaming nose becomes very important. Reindeer hydroplaning will also be possible overnight resulting in much louder landings on rooftops. 8-)

The 12Z Euro suggests the upper low stalls briefly (6-12 hours) near Lubbock before ejecting E along the Red River Valley. That model solution would end precip Monday morning and take the upper low to N Mississippi by Tuesday morning.

Heaviest rain for us appears to be this evening and overnight. Should taper off to only occasional very light rain by Christmas morning and generally dry tomorrow. A bit more light rain on Monday as the upper low passes to the north. I doubt we'll see 2" out of this, as it should be mostly stratiform rain rather than convective. Maybe 1/2" to an 1.25".

Looks like Santa Claus has to contend with rain tonight. Anyways, a great Christmas gift. Santa and his elves have been working hard to give us rain. 8-)

NWS Houston is saying rain on Christmas.

Code: Select all

Christmas Day: Rain likely, mainly before noon. Cloudy, with a high near 51. North wind between 10 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Sunday Night: A 50 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. North wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Afternoon update from HGX suggesting rains will taper a bit tomorrow as the Coastal Low near Corpus passes to our S and heads E. The Upper Low will likely produce heavier rains Christmas Night into Monday morning as that system finally passes just to our N on Monday. The 18Z WRF/NMM is suggesting some instability as the Upper Low approaches, so some rumbles of thunder may be possible with the heavier showers. It appears clearing skies will finally return late Monday night into Tuesday as the U/L heads NE.

Jersey Village/Cypress dropped 2-3 degrees from the last time I checked, now down to 43. Real Feel temps in the mid 30's ...getting very windy also. Our forecast low for tonight is around 41 degrees. We're almost already at our low temp.

I know we need rain but this weather SUX!!! I had to put together a trampoline over the past 2 hours and I'm soaked and freezing. That and the fact that there's mud everywhere I go makes me hate this weather.

Plus, the kids will be sad tomorrow when they see their trampoline and can't go jump on it due to it being a wet mess.

It can rain only from 12a to 5a and has to dry out by 9 am.... Or, it has to snow.

I DEMAND DRY WEATHER!! lol!!!

Indeed! Send some of that snow over other parts of Texas where it is not going to happen, over here where it is not going to happen....

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX
1116 PM CST SAT DEC 24 2011

NOTE...AVIATION AFD IS BELOW.

.UPDATE...
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AT LEAST FOR A BIT MORE...
AND WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE SNOW FALL OUTSIDE THE DOOR.
THE SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH ALL OF CHRISTMAS DAY...
AMOUNTS IN THE GRIDS ARE NOW THROWN IN THE FRAY

A TROWAL WILL SET UP ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH CHRISTMAS DAY
AND MOISTURE IS IN PLACE WHILE THE SKIES STAY GRAY.
LIFT STAYS CLOSE BY AS THE LOW HARDLY MOVES...
BUT HOW CLOSE WILL IT BE AND WHICH MODEL TO CHOOSE?

BANDING WILL CONTINUE AS WE STAY NORTHEAST OF THE LOW...
OUTSIDE OF THE BANDS THE SNOW WILL FALL SLOW.
SNOW WILL AGGREGATE INSIDE OF THE BANDS
AND ONE INCH PER HOUR RATES COULD COVER THE LANDS.

MOST OF THE AREA HOWEVER WILL SEE RATES A BIT LIGHT...
LESS THAN ONE HALF AN INCH WILL HOPEFULLY BE RIGHT.
ACCUMULATIONS ARE TRICKY WITH SNOW ALREADY DOWN...
7 INCHES IN HALE CENTER WITH AN INCH AROUND TOWN.

IF LIFT COMBINES WITH THE TROWAL AND MOISTURE IN PLACE...
HEAVIER SNOWFALL AMOUNTS COULD DEFINITELY BE THE CASE.
ALL MODELS HINT THAT THE TROWAL WILL BE NEARBY...
BUT THE EXACT LOCATION COULD MAKE ME THE FALL GUY.

WILL HOLD OFF ON CHANGES UNTIL ALL THE MODELS ARRIVE
SO THE MID SHIFT CAN EVALUATE AND SEE IF THEY JIVE.
3 TO 5 INCHES IS WHAT THE NAM TRIES TO ADD
BUT THE CMC SHOWS ONLY ONE AND THAT DIFFERENCE IS BAD.

IF THERE IS GOOD NEWS IN THE CONCERNS I HAVE STATED...
IT IS THAT THE MID SHIFT WILL BE HERE SOON AND HOPEFULLY GLAD
THAT I WAITED.
WILL KEEP ALL THE PRODUCTS GOING IN THE STATE THEY ARE NOW
AND HOPE AND PRAY THAT HEAVIER AMOUNTS I WON/T HAVE TO PLOW.

THE OTHER ISSUE IN PLACE IS THE LOW STAYS FOR A FEW DAYS...
SNOW COULD LINGER INTO MONDAY WHICH WE WILL HAVE TO APPRAISE.
TOO MANY THINGS TO CONSIDER IN THIS LAST HOUR ON OUR SHIFT...
AND THE TAFS STILL HAVE TO BE DONE BEFORE WE GO ADRIFT.

YET ANOTHER CHRISTMAS EVE IS ABOUT TO GO BY
AND MY AFD IS OUT FOR YOU TO ENJOY.
HOWEVER SOME FOLKS DO SAY THAT THIS TRADITION IS GETTING OLD...
THAT IT SHOULD DISAPPEAR LIKE CHEESE COVERED IN MOLD.

THE TRADITION WILL CONTINUE THAT STARTED SO LONG AGO...
OUR THOUGHTS IN RHYME THAT I STRIVE TO BESTOW.
SO ONCE AGAIN BEFORE WE HEAD OUT INTO STUFF FALLING THAT IS WHITE
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM WFO LUBBOCK...AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT!

So I got on Facebook earlier and saw a few friends of mine who live in the League City area say it was snowing. On the status were a few comments of people saying it was indeed snowing. I commented and replied by saying what they were more than likely seeing was very light slow drizzle falling which can sometimes get mistaken by flurries. (when looking at a street light). The person that posted the status, along with a few others argued with me saying, "No, it was snow. Because every now and then a big fat snowflake would fall." I just left it at that and didn't want to get into anything. HOWEVER, I wanted to see if any League City people on this forum saw or heard the same thing. I live in Pasadena which isn't too far away from League City and stayed outside for a bit to see if I could see some 'big flakes' but never saw anything but drizzle.
If we were to see any 'precip' other than rain right now, my best guess would be sleet before a big fat snowflake. But I could be wrong.

On another note, I would like to wish everyone on here a very Merry Christmas and hope it's a blessed day spent with loved ones. May we celebrate with our families while we open gifts and also not forget the true meaning on this rainy/dreary day.

Merry Christmas everyone. It looks like a day filled with light rain/drizzle chances before heavier showers return overnight into Monday. The upper low is stil spinning to our W and will meander throughout the day as additional short wave energy drops S into CA and eventually kicks the U/L E. The 06Z WRF/NMM suggests the upper low and attending short wave vorts will pass across Central TX late tonight crossing E TX by Monday evening. Rains should decrease rapidlly from W to E as the U/L finally swings ENE. A drying trend should begin on Tuesday and continue throughout the week as we end the year 2011.

The vertical temperature profile at League City early this morning was one that could not possibly produce a snowflake. Temperatures warmed considerably aloft in the precip - up into the 50s! The sub-freezing layer was way up above the clouds. They didn't see snow in League City unless the vertical profile temps were off by nearly 20 degrees, which isn't likely.

Should be mostly dry today, as we're in the dry slot now. Might be a little light rain tonight/tomorrow morning but the heavier rain is over with. Precip amounts ranged from 1/2" to 1.25" across Harris County.
