97L in the gulf, should move slowly west over the next 3-4 days with a small chance to become a named system, should enhance rainfall in texas though as it moves west

CMC/ Ai GFS both have major rainfall events in houston on tuesday- wednesday this upcoming week. CMC and UKMET blow up the remnants of Dolly into a hurricane in the central gulf before moving west to WNW. Needless to say its going to be an interesting time ahead

I would not be entirely surprised if 97L quickly spins up into something tropical before landfall across W.La or SE Texas on Tuesday. Wind shear should continue to lessen today and dry air doesn't look like too much of a factor. Main inhibiting factor will be time and how long (if) a LLC can form.

Weak surface low pressure south of the southeast Louisiana coast
Some development of this system is possible as it moves toward the upper TX/southwest LA coast Tues-Wed…chances for development currently at 30%
Interest along the upper TX and southwest LA coast should closely monitor this system and forecasts
Early morning visible satellite images show a weak and broad surface low pressure system that was located southwest of Pensacola yesterday has drifted to the southwest and is now located over the open Gulf waters southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Deep convection has developed near and south of the broad circulation over the north-central Gulf and 97L appears to be at least slightly more organized than yesterday. However, surface pressures are high (1015-1016mb) at ships, buoys, and platforms over the area and thus far there has been no significant pressure falls.
97L is located on the south side of a building mid and upper level ridge over northern TX extending toward the mid MS valley…and this steering flow will result in a slow motion toward the west or WNW over the next 24 hours and this is strongly supported by available model guidance. By 48 hours (Tuesday) 97L is approaching the US Gulf coast between Galveston Bay and Lake Charles and then continues toward the WNW inland over SE TX mid week.
While much of the model guidance shows only modest development with 97L, shear values in the northern Gulf have fallen into the 5-10kt range and water surface temperatures are in the upper 80’s, so if a defined surface circulation can form with sustained deep convection there is some potential for more development than the models suggest. It is possible that a tropical system could be approaching the upper TX coast on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Regardless of additional development, a surge a tropical moisture looks likely across the upper TX and southwest LA coast Tuesday-Thursday with an increasing threat of heavy to potentially excessive rainfall.
Interests along the upper TX and southwest LA coast should closely monitor the progress of this system and check weather forecasts daily

Now up to 50% odds of development for 97L, was 30% earlier, shear is very low, dry air isnt bad, its becoming better organized just looking at current satellite imagery , has 2.5 or so days to work with over water, im just sayin.. Overall the environment is definitely more conducive for strengthening compared to be Bertha went through

Doesn’t look like much for the western parts of SETX. Golden Triangle will be the big winner.Stratton20 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2026 12:42 pm Now up to 50% odds of development for 97L, was 30% earlier, shear is very low, dry air isnt bad, its becoming better organized just looking at current satellite imagery , has 2.5 or so days to work with over water, im just sayin.. You got the high to the north which as we know is usually a recipe for a slow mover.

Cpv17 na i think a good chunk of SE texas will cash in on this, steering is weak once this moves inland, i get the skepticism, but i think we have a better chance of getting good rains from this compared to bertha, this wont be a sheared, lop sided system
