Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until noon Tuesday.

Overnight lows of 23-27 across the area this morning with lingering cloud cover helping to keep temperatures 2-3 degrees warmer than forecast. Wind chills have been brutal in the low and mid 10’s with north winds of 10-20mph for much of the night. There have been a few icy patches reported where residual water has frozen overnight.

Back edge of clouds and clearing line is currently moving into the metro area and expect sunny skies for much of the midday into the afternoon house allowing temperatures to warm into the mid and upper 30’s. Much of the area should rise above freezing between noon-100pm.

With clear skies and light winds tonight another cold morning is expected Tuesday, but guidance has come in a bit warmer possibly from some modification of the arctic air mass and potentially some mid and high level moisture approaching from the west late tonight. Generally lows will be similar to this morning (maybe a few degrees colder especially north and west).

Temperatures warm into the mid and upper 40’s on Tuesday and rise above freezing around 1000am.

Late Week/Weekend:

Another surge of cold air will be possible Friday into the weekend with temperatures likely below freezing again by Saturday and Sunday mornings. Could see hard freeze by next Sunday but this is several days away. Rainfall on Friday looks to end prior to the arrival of the colder air and any freezing temperatures so will keep it all liquid.

I love the fact that the warmest day over the next two weeks, is considered an average winter day here (mid 60s, low 40s).

I am sorry. I got distracted. A split of the Polar Vortex. Stratton is correct. It can be a classic set up for winter storms in the southern part of the United States.

We saw this past weekend that for SE, Texas to get meaningful winter type precipitation, below freezing temperatures need to be in place first especially since we are near the gulf. Moisture was in place this past weekend but it was too warm. 2021 was the perfect setup, cold air was already in place, then disturbance moved across the state to produce snow. We don’t want freezing rain, perfect example is Oxnard, Mississippi

In 2021 I got very little snow, it was mostly sleet out my way. The last real snowstorm I’ve had out here was back in December 2017.

Yeah, N MS and into TN looks like a war zone. Hopefully never happens here.

I only got a glazing of ice out of this event, but it was enough to cause me to land omy my a** trying to get my car to start so i could get the engine to warm up a but , definitely hope we never see teh kind of ice storm they are seeing in that region

Total ice accumulation for this storm event.

Ice sort of danced around the metro Houston area…warm bridge surfaces (34-36 degrees) and some warm rain processes and latent heat release (temperature of the actual rain drop was warm 35-40) likely the reason the metro area was spared.

Ice was slow to form on elevated surfaces even when the air temperature was 27-29 degrees.

Another strong cold front will move into the region Friday afternoon or evening and may result in freezing temperatures again this weekend.

At this time light rain and showers on Friday will end well before the air is cold enough for any freezing or frozen precipitation…so the weekend looks dry and cold…with likley lows in the 20’s and highs in the 40’s.

I cannot remember when I have not depended on a combination of this forum (and all previous versions) and S2K for my weather. It is such a comfort to know I have these resources. I follow others across different Social Media platforms; but, nothing comes close to the valuable information all of you provide.
