Lmao..like clock work

" Ah, the data for my improved wall has made it into the ECMWF now. Result is 50s on Christmas vs. 20s. A few more bricks and I think I can get the temperature above 70 on Christmas. Note that there is still no cold air in northern Canada. Temps are above zero throughout the Yukon and Northwest Territories. We need to wait and see what develops up there before we can gain any confidence in what will happen next. Maybe by Sunday"

Well I mean we’re in that medium range where models do often start to lose it so I’m not completely surprised but they do usually correct back in time.

I see everyone still swinging from op run to op run.

Ensembles are still very cold. And we are not ready to start trusting our operational runs yet.

Classic Winter thread! :)

Exactly. This front that just came thru is perfect. No need for temps in the teens unless it's got some white stuff with it.

You can tell the educated ones vs the ones who aren’t.

I guess it depends on the specific threshold that is considered "year-round heat and humidity."
  • The mid-upper 80s and 90s w/ 70s dewpoints year-round like in the equatorial zone is definitely quite heavy: this is what is typical in places like Singapore, Amazonia, the like. No winter heating, but quite a bit of A/C though.
  • In contrast, poleward tropical regions, still warm, tend to have 70s-low 80s, and cool quite a bit to 60s/50s dewpoints. This is areas like Hawaii that Jasons2k has been referencing. Might be able to pull-off both no heat and no A/C: this is best of both worlds, unless 60s and 50s dewpoints is considered "humid."
I personally would take both scenarios over the deep Arctic cold, as I do not see any use for temps below 50°F. But more importantly, I just don't trust that the state has learned its lesson/is ready after last year's debacle (and the events that have transpired since then).

Great example can be seen in the comments of the recent Travis Herzog ABC13 post on FB.

I was doing yard work with my Dad in Longview and it was 75 and starting to thunderstorm and a few hours later it was 25 with heavy sleet and snow.
I believe part of the debacle in Feb 2021 was that lots of new growth happened in the TX Triangle cities since those 80s affairs. So lots of infrastructure, foundations, people, etc that literally might never have seen such cold until last year's outbreak.

Cold w/ snow/sleet is wintry fun, but not too good for the TX grid, infrastructure, etc. The same levels of cold, but dry might be easier to handle, though more "boring". This is, unless, lessons have been learned since 2021, of course.
