There's no way that can be possible. If it was truly 32ºF all night, trees and cars would have ice. It's hovered at 32 all night at my parents place in The Woodlands and they have ice on everything. Roads are in fine shape tho.

7:00 Update from Jeff:

Ice Storm in progress over SE TX.

Public reports indicate ice accumulations of .25 to .40 of an inch from Columbus to Katy to Jersey Village to Humble and northward to Hempstead and Conroe. Tree limbs are starting to break and fall under the heavy weight of the ice and are knocking out power. Power outages have increased to 37,000 and continue to increase.

Radar indicates additional freezing rain extends along I-10 from San Antonio to near Columbus and this will push into the areas already very hard hit with accumulations overnight. Additional ice accumulations of .05 to .15 of an inch will be possible with storm totals possibly exceeding .50 of an inch over northern Harris, Waller, Austin, northern Fort Bend, and Montgomery Counties.

Surface temperatures remain very near 32 north of US 59 which is just warm enough to keep most bridges over the Houston metro area from freezing. West of the Brazos River and north of HWY 105 bridges are ice covered and driving is extremely hazardous.

Lots of ice here, but it's mostly elevated. It has warmed some as the ice on my bedded plants has mostly melted, but there is more ice up in the trees. It is definitely thicker at the tops of the trees and it looks 'whiter' the higher up you go. Shows just how much a degree or two can make a big difference.

Pine and Oak trees are as Jason suggested very covered with ice and those neighbors that haven't trimmed in a while are showing some real stress of sagging limbs. I'll post some pictures in a bit. Another heavier batch of freezing rain is moving in.

I am more worried about this next batch of freezing rain than the earlier stuff - outages under 30k now, but I expect that might go up again

adding radar

Can hardly notice any ice on the trees over here near Memorial Park. Seems as though we hovered just above freezing the entire night.

Candy Cane wrote:It's March and this is the 4th (FOURTH) winter storm this season. Record? Historic? Never in my 28 years do I remember anything close to this, never.

As of now, Centerpoint showing 34,000 people without power and growing quickly. It's hard to get a good ice storm at 32 degrees but clearly it's happening. Spoke to the 'rents this morning about 4:30am and they said that the pine trees are leaning and cars are encased in ice. Also icicles hanging off everything.

Easily the biggest icing event since '97.
I do not recall any freezing rain in March. It has snowed once in March in 1932.

Finally getting to 33 here. That was 41 hours below freezing. I've almost spent more of March below freezing than above. Hurry up, Spring.

Tree limbs from Pines and Oaks falling like crazy near the Copperfield area. Wondering about those pines in The Woodlands and Champions area?

It looks like a winter wonderland in The Woodlands! I saw a few snapped limbs and some pine trees that had been hanging on since IKE are finally down. At least one crew was out on the trails with chain saws. 35 degrees now and the ice is melting.
