Re: January 2024

The -AO and -NAO combo isn’t enough to give us anything really cold. I thought that was key to getting us cold??? -EPO is the king of getting cold down here. Need strong ridging over Alaska and the far NW Territories and for that ridge to extend north into the Beaufort Sea. So very true about the E...

Negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) do give cold air.

Re: January 2024

The winter of 1930-1931 did not have freezing temperature. January 1930 had a low of 5°F. 1931 did not see freezing temperature. March 1932 had freezing temperatures and it snowed. 1931 and 2023 are years without freezing temperature recorded. Of course, data from the past should be taken with caut...

Re: January 2024

2023 was an atrocious weather year. 2024 better be way better. The only time that I will side with you and others on this board concerns summer weather — droughts like in 2022 and especially 2023 are useless, I'd much rather have cooler, wetter summers like that from 2021. But freezes are also usel...

Arctic Oscillation and Polar Vortex Analysis and Forecasts https://www.aer.com/science-research/climate-weather/arctic-oscillation/ Interesting read. Judah Cohen has a Twitter account and has a forecast for polar vortex to be over the Lower 48 by early January 2024. https://twitter.com/judah47/statu...

Re: December 2023

Has anyone noticed how the predictions about cold coming to Houston get quickly deflated, and reinstated for a later date? Remember the initial conversation was about mid to late December. Next was late December to early January. We are already taking about late January into February. There is a pa...

Re: December 2023

I’ve never been a huge Nino fan like most on here and Storm2K. We are little too far south to benefit from a good Nino. Dallas to OKC is your sweet spot for a Nino. We need a weak Modoki to squeeze anything out of the frozen variety. Consider me a fan of neutral ENSO or weak Nina’s more for Winter ...

Re: December 2023

What’s the latest date of Houston’s first freeze? Have we ever had a freeze less winter? I used this to see Houston first and last freeze. https://www.weather.gov/wrh/Climate?wfo=hgx Houston's latest first freeze is March 9, 1932. It snowed that time in March 1932. Turns out Houston did not have a ...
