Re: National Tropical Weather Conference 2015
Hello folks! My dear friend Steve (Srain from here as well as AmWx) told me all about you here. He suggested that I should sign up and see what it's all about. So, here I am. I'm Eleanor, a meteorologist with NWS Boston/Taunton, Mass. I actually know a couple of you here, too (yes, it's me, Brooks!...

Re: March: Spring Like Weather/Upper Ridge This Weekend
That would look knee jerk 'subtropical' if we were a bit later in the season.

Re: March: Moderating Temperatures and Wet Weather Next Week
NWS says they're going to be more worried about bayou and creek flooding later today... ground is saturated and rain may become even heavier as we push toward the afternoon. Let the drought be broken!

Bayous looking good for now, but will be interesting to observe how they respond to an additional 4" of rain upstream... http://www.harriscountyfws.org/GageDetail/Index/2220?R=1 Happy Monday, everyone. I'm in for Chita this morning on KHOU 11 News. If you miss the morning show, I'll be here for...

Re: February: Progressive Cold Fronts & Rain Returning Next
Oh... we can dream. The 06z GFS run forecasts several inches of snow for areas just north of Houston, by the close of business NEXT Wednesday -- 7-days out. Guaranteed, GFS will "un-forecast" this scenario, then 36hrs before, "re-forecast" it... Might be interesting next week. Ma...

Re: January 26-28th 2015 Nor'Easter
While southern New England is getting it pretty good with a typical "heavy" snowfall (I've seen worse), but atypical winds -- it was a dud for New York and New Jersey. The wind was so bad, it's blown much of the snow away into piles and drifts... The forecast was NYC (up to 2 feet," i...

Re: January-Cold Front & Increasing Rain Chances Mid Week
Midland and Odessa has switched to all snow at this hour. And that's ahead of the model-forecasted 540 line... granted they're at a bit of elevation, but it makes you wonder about our Houston snow chance tomorrow... it'll be in the 40s, but with cold air aloft I wouldn't be shocked if we saw a few ...

Re: January-Cold Front & Increasing Rain Chances Mid Week
This is the first time I can remember - it's been many years - since I recall seeing the NWS put out 100% POPS in advance. That's pretty amazing. I also noticed they put "100" for the POP forecast. They used to use "+" instead. I wonder if that was a policy change or an oversigh...

Re: January-Cold Front & Increasing Rain Chances Mid Week
12z EURO also shows a dip in the 540 line all the way to the coast (with precip commencing) Friday afternoon... flakes for Lufkin?? A surprise 1"-3" on grassy surfaces up there? Interesting, indeed.

Hehehehe #WinterGeek (Do we do hashtags here?)
540 line on EURO for Friday.......... it's an outlier for all other models and it'll be too warm for more than a few graupel pellets north.

Re: We Make Our Own Forecasts
I'm like you, BlueJay. I'd love to have that sort of time to do the weather. The rule -- which won't change, as it's a national initiative based on market research -- is not more than 2:30 to 3 minutes on a quiet day. Any more than that on a quiet day and most people tune out... Overall, there's so ...

Re: January-Sun Returns/Significant Pattern Change Next Week
Good evening from Taos Ski Valley. It was a warm 10F here this morning, but 'warmed' to 35F this afternoon at 9500 feet. I had an awesome day of sightseeing and drove the ‘Enchanted Circle’. My 90 mile road trip began in Taos Ski Valley with the first stop being the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The ski...

Yes, whenever Doc swings by, it's all hands on deck! He's hilarious, and has stories to tell... Thanks for all the kind words on this post. I'll try to post more "day to day operations" type stuff if and when we get any serious weather. I may even link to a live behind the scenes video via...

We Make Our Own Forecasts
Happy New Year to everyone! Hopefully 2015 will be a good year for you and yours. I wanted to start a Q & A string regarding our day-to-day forecasting operations at KHOU-TV. Many haven't been to the studio, or have more than an impression of what we do behind the scenes. In a typical day, we'll...

Re: January-Cold & Dreary Continues/Sun Returns Late Week?
Of interest, last March Houston saw WILD swings in temperature from the 30s to the 80s. That month we also saw our last bout of freezing rain and sleet: on March 4th, 2014. So -- while things seem marginal to warmer now (for winter weather potential), we still have long way to go this winter. (The l...

Re: January -Icy WX N/Light Cold Rain S This Weekend?
Good question. The region is within a few degrees of freezing after the rain starts falling, north of Houston. Houston's low probably around 33°-34°... Conroe cooler than that. Now, easy to get excited about dew points being so low and the wet bulbing potential, but dew points are actually starting ...
