Re: December 2014:Christmas WX/Cold & Messy New Years Eve?

12z GFS shows a 1061mb high entering Montana @ 240 hrs. If that happens it will send a strong arctic front likely blasting straight down the Rockies and into TX. The signs of a pattern change are evident at the 500mb level, 570+ dam heights just South of Alaska in 8 days. If that forecast materiali...

Re: December 2014:Christmas WX/Cold & Messy New Years Eve?

Of interest... a professional, non-TV storm chaser SUV vehicle from the plains (complete with antennas, anemometer, marked with graphics) -- was spotted driving down Pinellas Blvd near St. Pete, FL at 3:30am this morning -- and the person that spotted him didn't think he was there to visit grandma ...

Re: December 2014:Christmas WX/Cold & Messy New Years Eve?

The 0z Euro shows the initial front (27th-28th) as colder for TX, the GFS & PGFS depict this as a pretty mild front by late December standards but then the GFS brings a strong front through on the 30-31st. I'm looking forward to the return of winter in TX, here's to hoping some of these model ru...

Re: December 2014:Active/Stormy Pattern Developing

1.56" was the total rainfall here. I spent the last part of today getting a new PWS mounted and reporting to wunderground.com.

Re: December 2014:Active/Stormy Pattern Developing

1.36" inches here in coastal Brazoria county since yesterday. Srain, the ensembles for the 27th-4th look very favorable for cold throughout most of the US. Not to mention the incredible analog list that the CPC turned out yesterday with Dec 1989 and 1983. I think we could be looking at somethin...

Re: March: Winter Weather Advisories/Warning Issued

The temp is finally starting to drop faster here 37.6F, a full degree in the last 30 minutes. I'm having to live this event vicariously through y'all Northerners.

Let's see what effects is has on the temp there. Will it be evaporative cooling or will the moisture pull the upper warm layer down and mix to warm the surface?

Re: March: Winter Weather Advisories/Warning Issued

This is a dangerous situation folks, and possibly not just for bridges and elevated surfaces. Ground temps will have cooled significantly from the low maximum temperatures we had throughout the day. The effect of those 80s yesterday afternoon is getting more diffuse the longer the cold stays in plac...

Re: March: Winter Weather Advisories/Warning Issued

Once again it looks likely that we will miss out on the wintry fun here. It's a balmy 42F and may not even hit the freezing mark tonight.

North of I-10 definitely looks primed for some action though.

Re: March: Wind Chill Advisory & Wintry Mischief Possible

30.9F on my station currently, was a little skeptical that we would see freezing here but there it is. A very cold March morning in SE TX. IAH is at 27F with a windchill of 13.

Re: March: Slight Risk Severe Storms & Wintry Mischief Possi

The 12z GFS continues to trend down with 2m temps, not sure what MOS shows but it is now at 32F for tomorrow morning at IAH, the NAM has 26! I think probably somewhere in the middle with bias toward the NAM. I'm going to say IAH reaches 28 tonight/tomorrow morning.

Re: March: In Like A Lion. Slight Risk Severe Storms Sunday

Here's a snippet taken from tonight's HGX discussion: IT`S ALL IN THE TIMING AND...CONSIDERING THE ANTICIPATED SHARP DECLINE OF LATE DAY INTO EVENING NORTHERN COUNTY LOWER LEVEL TEMPERATURES...THERE EXISTS A MENTIONABLE CHANCE FOR LIGHT FREEZING RAIN AND/OR DRIZZLE. IF THIS FRONT IS AS AGGRESSIVE AS...

The 0z GFS has come in a few degrees colder, now has 34F at IAH tomorrow night. About a 40 degree temperature drop is in store for tomorrow from a high in the 70s.

We had a few light showers yesterday, no thunder down here. Probably only around 0.05" of rain fell.

Re: February: Foggy Mornings/Warm Temps & Changes Late This

I respect wxman's expertise but It's probably too early to say there won't be any freezes in South Houston. They have happened several times in March before and we don't really know.

Re: February: Active Weather Week/Pattern Change Next Week

It will be stuck in the 30s and dry for a couple days starting Thursday, with maybe a light freeze that night. Nothing out of the ordinary for this year. Now we would be measuring the snow in feet if the GFS verified on precip for the middle of next week but dropped the temps 10F. Probably won't hap...

Re: February: Active Weather Week/Tracking 3 Winter Storms

This air mass isn't overly cold compared to previous fronts we've had already this year. The reason for that is the source region in Canada is not very cold (for Canada). A quick check on wunderground shows that the coldest temps in Canada are currently in the N central part of the country around th...
