Re: July 2022

Different story for the residents of Bastrop who lost everything in 2011. Yep there were wild fires galore that year, the pine forest around Bastrop was nearly completely burn downed.Even portions of Montgomery county had some wild fires that destroyed some of the pine forest. Yep, that was a bad f...

Re: July 2022

I agree with Stratton. The 18z GFS run is the best so far today. Relief could come as soon as this Wednesday/Thursday with a subtle inverted trough, for those that are lucky. Otherwise, the next week looks promising on that run, with another tropical influx, followed by what seems to be a backdoorin...

Re: July 2022

Honestly, I would rather have another Allison, Harvey, or Imelda than either this drought or the 2021 freeze. That's how much I dislike droughts and freezes.

Re: July 2022

Gainesville is a beautiful place with an amazing climate, no doubt about that. I’d trade that for our climate in a heartbeat!! My only problem with Gainsville goes back to the issue you mentioned, regarding the "frost line." It still is USDA hardiness 9A just like Houston, so won't have t...

Re: July 2022

Walked around my yard and the parts that were stressed are dead to the ground now. Parts that were a touch stronger are recovering. Gonna be a lot of weeds to contend with. One of my neighbors didn't water for two months and his entire front yard is solid brown. Amazed the HOA didn't eviscerate him...

Ptarmigan wrote: Sun Jul 03, 2022 6:51 pmJuly 2012 had heavy rain and flooding. Same goes with July 2005.

Summer 2011 is an outlier from a statistical standpoint.
True. Here's hoping that 2011 stays an outlier, and that this summer turns around more like 2005 and 2012 🥰

Did you know that Progreso, right on the northern Yucatan peninsula, only averages ~16 inches of rainfall annually?

Re: July 2022

You can use this and filter by division, region, etc. by month or year showing the temp or precip avg compared to climate avg. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/us-maps/12/201205?products%5B%5D=divisionalpcpnrank It’s pretty cool. 2011 and 2012 aren’t good for TX, obviously. 2012 was much...

Re: July 2022

It’s not a magic wall. I know. Just put that emphasis because it's actually been a while since I've been in the eastern areas of metro Houston — so if the contrast between places like Winnie, Texas City, Galveston, etc versus your home was really that stark (and not, more say, a gradualized gradien...

Re: July 2022

Part of the issue that should be addressed is the annual precipitation drastically drops off from Houston westward. For example, San Antonio receives about half the precipitation of Beaumont. Meanwhile, east of Beaumont, precipitation does not vary nearly as much annually. It becomes slightly wette...

My mistake. Will go back and edit if I can.

Back to weather: there's a magic wall between Beaumont and Houston.

Re: July 2022

I’m back. Lots of standing water until Mt. Belvieu. The Winnie area, as usual, was flooded. Everything was nice and green until we got to about 1485 & 99 and poof, the grass went brown. It's like a magical wall right at the TX/LA border. That said, there was some solid storms over in Pearland o...

Re: July 2022

In Florida it doesn’t seem to matter what the ENSO state is. ENSO really doesn't matter too much in the summer season itself, really — the ENSO effect is more on the antecedent fall thru spring cooler season, such that rain/lack thereof determines whether any summer dry spells can be tolerated. For...

I think I need to move to Florida. The weather in this state just plain sucks.
Meanwhile, right next door in Beaumont and neighboring Louisiana, they get loads and loads of rain, way more than Florida.

Re: July 2022

Those photos upthread were refreshing to see. Not only in context of the heat as mentioned, but also because it reminds the novelty was still enjoyed by many. In any other non-wx website, bringing up the event immediately spirals down to political baggage of regarding the energy grid debacle, how mu...

Re: July 2022

On a brighter note, the 18z features a MUCH better pattern evolution than all the previous runs for today — keeps the worst heat away from Texas, and the pattern set-up as far as ridge location is more ideal in ensuring better moisture over Texas (i.e. for sea-breeze storms and more).

Re: July 2022

There had been a 70% chance of rain tomorrow and now it’s down to 30%. If you had asked me a week ago if we would be getting rain this week I would have said “yes, finally, it looks like a sure thing” A week TC or low landfalling WEST of here was supposed to finally deliver. Nope, just another Lucy...

My 0.00” streak at the home base continues. My house sitters have been watering all week, again!!! Great weather down here in Florida. Light winds. Almost no waves. Crystal clear water. Daily light show just after sunset with the east coast sea breeze coming across. Heaven… Definitely heavenly. Tha...

Re: July 2022

Honestly, yeah. I'm tired of Beaumont/Louisiana constantly cashing in on these floods: there, I said it. It honestly drives one crazy, as if its some magical wall right at the state line. It would at least make sense if it was some sort of mountainous rain shadow — but no, it's pure flat land, meani...
